 FACULTY RESPONSIBILITES

 THE DEPARTMENT

 The faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are passionate about student learning. The Department’s faculty value an active and collaborative teaching and learning environment, with a special focus on eliminating achievement gaps and serving an increasingly diverse student body (currently over half our majors are women and over a third are under-represented minority students). The Department supports innovation in teaching techniques and pedagogy. The Statistics curriculum incorporates active learning environments through simulations and hand-on student activities. The Department engages in collaborations with faculty in other departments such as team-teaching in our interdisciplinary STEM Freshman Year Experience and coordinating actuarial career preparation.

  Majors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics may pursue a B.S. or a B.A. degree in mathematics or statistics, including concentrations in applied statistics and bi-disciplinary mathematics. The Department’s objectives include providing students with a broad, fundamental background in mathematics or statistics and their applications to prepare them to work in education or industry, conduct research, or pursue graduate study. The Department also serves an important role by providing key courses in the University’s general education program and courses that support other majors. The Department is very engaged with K-12 schools and teachers in Northern California, including extensive grant-funded professional development activities.

 DUTIES OF THE POSITION

 The Department of Mathematics and Statistics within the School of Science and Technology at Sonoma State University (SSU) is seeking a highly motivated teacher/scholar in statistics or statistics education. Exceptional candidates in other areas of mathematics and statistics may also be considered, for example those with experience in areas such as data analytics or biostatistics. The available tenure-track position is at the rank of assistant professor and requires a Ph.D. in statistics or a Ph.D. in mathematics with a Masters degree in statistics or its equivalent, or a Ph.D. in statistics education with a Masters in statistics or its equivalent, or a closely related field. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching and be actively engaged in scholarly work.

The selected candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate statistics and/or mathematics courses as appropriate for their expertise. Examples could include statistics major courses, such as statistical programming and consulting, general education courses, calculus sequence courses, and mathematics major courses. The selected individual should be committed to teaching a diverse group of undergraduates, including groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.  This individual should demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve.

  The total teaching assignment each semester is approximately 12 credit hours, with a reduced semester teaching load of approximately 9 credit hours a semester for the first two years. However, if successful in obtaining external funds, the successful candidate may teach fewer units. Faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are also expected to participate in developing the Department’s curricula and to maintain a program of scholarship.

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on campus-wide committees. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research. The selected individual will be committed to teaching a diverse group of undergraduates and supervising undergraduate research projects.

  PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

 To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

 A Ph.D. in Statistics, Statistics Education, Mathematics, or other related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in statistics, or a Ph.D. in mathematics with a Masters degree in statistics or its equivalent, or a Ph.D. in statistics education with a Masters in statistics or its equivalent. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching and be actively engaged in scholarly work. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is desired but not required.

 To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, and creative achievement; service to the University; and public service and service to the community.  Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that “the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any.  Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

  RANK AND SALARY

 Salary, service credit, and rank (when appropriate) depends upon academic preparation and professional experience.

 The approximate salary range for this position is: $78,000 - $82,000
