DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Advising

* Advise all English, Creative Writing, and English Education majors and minors, inter-college transfers, and external transfers.

* Work with LAS advisors to monitor students' progress toward completing General Education, foreign language, and major requirements.

* Participate in retention efforts, including special advising for students on academic probation.

* Discuss and promote internships, graduate and professional programs, and career development with undergraduates.

* Serve as LAS 299 advisor, evaluating work done on Study Abroad programs for equivalency or elective credit at the University of Illinois.

* Serve as primary liaison with the English Student Council, assisting with student publications and events.

* Assist with departmental events aimed at undergraduates such as information sessions, the Illinois English Expo, and the Course Showcase.

* Provide support for departmental publications and communication to undergraduate majors, i.e. the advising website, blog, and social media.

* Maintain an awareness of university and community resources available to undergraduates in dealing with a wide range of emotional, physical, financial, and academic difficulties.

Recruitment and Outreach

* Work with the senior advisor on outreach to prospective students and recruitment and yield of applicants.

* Coordinate with other advisors on campus to promote and support undergraduate interest in the humanities.

* Represent the department to prospective students and their parents at events such as LAS Discovery Days, Orange & Blue Days, and Admitted Student Days.

Assessment and Curriculum

* Serve as a member of the departmental curriculum committee.

* Assist the senior advisor in managing enrollments for English and Creative Writing courses.

Seasonal Duties

* Assist with the coordination of the departmental convocation ceremony.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

* Bachelor's degree in English, Creative Writing, or related field.

* Professional experience working with college students in academic advising, counseling, student affairs, and/or career development; or familiarity with academic advising, counseling, student affairs and career development gained through post-baccalaureate educational experience

* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and also to work independently.

* Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with culturally diverse groups.

Preferred:

* At least one year of previous experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related activity in a college or university setting.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
