Position Information

Under general direction of the Academic Advisor Supervisor of the Economics and Political Science Administrative Unit, this position is independently responsible to provide fundamental primary advising to and the management of the undergraduate majors in Economics and Political Science. Using developmental advising skills, independently make and clarify decisions, and exercise autonomous judgment in providing guidance and counseling to students. Interpret and implement policies and procedures in the Economics/Political Science unit. Create and implement programs to ensure timely enrollment and graduation within four years consistent with existing university, college, and departmental policies. Independently responsible for providing fundamental academic advising and services to the Economics/Political Science Administration Unit: Plan and implement undergraduate curriculum advising; recruitment and outreach; matriculation; graduation degree checks; design program reporting, and timely evaluations. Serve in a confidential advisory capacity to the department chair to ensure that departmental programs are offered in a timely manner to meet curriculum needs. The Economics/Political Science Administrative Unit consists of the following majors: Business Economics, Economics, Economics/Administrative Studies, Economics/Law and Society as well as Political Science, Political Science/Administrative Studies, Political Science International Affairs, Political Science/Law and Society, and Political Science/Public Service. Majors in the Economics/Political Sciences unit constitute one tenth in the entire campus population. Additionally, the position is responsible for the minors of Economics, Marxist Studies, Urban Studies, Political Science and International Relations. Due to the number of service classes given to the thousands of Pre-Business and Business Administration students, this position provides key advising to students in these majors. This requires current knowledge of the Business Administration major to support the needs of those students. Similarly, the increasing population of International Students to the UCR campus requires projecting and managing the curricular needs of these students to ensure that courses and programs which support this population are available.

Minimum Requirements

Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and personnel in other offices.
Ability to function independently and take responsibility for results.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Excellent proofreading, spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, & schools.
Ability to multi-task.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Ability to create and maintain a welcoming, courteous environment.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Ability to refine current procedures, organize and prioritize workload, with good attention to detail.
Experience using current word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs.
Excellent oral and written communications skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience using an on-line student information system.

Extensive experience using Student Information Systems Plus (SIS+)

Experience using IBM compatible personal computer in Windows environment.

Knowledge of UCR policies and procedures governing undergraduate student admissions, academic progress, financial aid and other student service operations.
