Job Description:

Provide academic advising in the Center for Advising, Support and Exploration. Advisors will advise new students, transients, ESL and undecided majors and assist with other activities including but not limited to career advising, orientation, first year college transition, registration and academic planning.

Duties are numbered for convenience and do not indicate order in terms of importance, frequency that the duty is performed, or the amount of time spent on the duty.

1) Provides academic advising to new students in all majors, transients, ESL and undecided.

2) Advises students on academic pathway tracks, course selection, prerequisites and offerings in person, via phone, e-mail or other delivery formats as needed.

3) Coordinates development of academic plan for degree and/or goal completion.

4) Assists prospective, current, and returning students. Explains the application, admission, enrollment, and financial aid process. Provides information on programs of study and next steps for enrollment, including admission criteria, documents needed, financial aid, new student orientation, placement testing, advising, course selection, registration, and fee payment. Provides information about campus services and resources, student life, an opportunities for campus involvement.

5) Develops and clarifies educational goals by conducting interviews, analyzing student needs, and reviewing applicable transcripts and other documents. Explains educational program options and assists students with developing a plan for degree and/or goal completion. Remains current on transfer requirements and procedures of Columbus State.

6) Assists students experiencing academic difficulty (warning,probation and academic dismissal) to develop a plan of action to promote academic success, and conducts appropriate academic counseling intervention.

7) Provides career advising assistance to undecided students. Identifies careers that match their personality type, values and skills, and assists student to develop educational and career goals.

8) Keeps accurate records. Reviews and verifies applications, transcripts and other documents.

9) Provides front desk coverage, as needed answering phones, facilitating student intake and screening and greeting students.

10) Maintains confidentiality of student files and other sensitive subject matter. Collects and maintains student contact for reporting purposes.

11) Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Works additional time and adjusts schedule as required to meet workload demands.

12) Performs other related duties as required.

Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. The employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 10 pounds when moving files, boxes and other materials.

Working Conditions: Normal office working conditions. Occasional exposure to difficult students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: college student development; academic assessment and advising practices; processes and practices related to assigned functional area. Skill in: maintaining documentation and records; operation of job-related equipment and other equipment; application of job related computer software. Ability to: maintain confidential and sensitive information; develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, students, general public, and other job contacts; effectively work with persons of varying cultures and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Guidance, or closely related field with at least one year of progressively responsible experience in student advising. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
