Administrative Support

Under the direction of the Preparator, in coordination with the Collections Manager and Asian Art Curator, assist with collection care, exhibitions, gallery rotations, teaching requests, and installation projects in support of the improvement of access to and care of the Museum's Asian collection objects within the context of all museum collections.

Object Preparation: As part of the installation/preparation crew during the period of a major storage improvement project, focus on improvements to storage conditions and methods of organization for improved teaching access. In keeping with professional standards, handle art objects, construct storage mounts for objects, and adjust storage shelving and furniture. Assist with the management of information and data-entry directly related to the care and movement of objects such as location changes and condition recording. Other storage project responsibilities as determined by the supervisor.

Exhibition Installation: As part of the installation crew, assist with the preparation of gallery spaces and objects for exhibition, including, but not limited to; fabrication of exhibit/display materials, movement of exhibition furniture and gallery walls, painting, installation of signage/didactics and adjustment to lighting for exhibitions according to aesthetic and conservation standards.

Collection Assessment: As requested by the Preparator, handle art work and assist the Asian curator to provide access to the collection and assist with re-organization of objects

Professional Skills Development: Develop, study and practice skills specific to working with Asian art such as, but not limited to, proper rolling of scrolls, creating archival scroll rollers, constructing archival scroll boxes, tying knots properly, learning terminology. Attend workshops if appropriate and visit other museums with Asian collections

Maintenance: Help maintain and organize the storage of exhibit preparation materials, tools, and exhibit furniture. Provide routine collection care and help maintain the appearance of exhibit spaces including but not limited to care and cleaning of display cases, replacing failing lamps, dusting frames and other exhibit furniture.

Education/Experience: Associates degree, B.A. preferred, in studio art-related field plus a minimum of two years' experience in museum preparation/installation or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Experience with construction, woodworking, painting, museum preparation, mount-making for storage and exhibition. Familiarity with museum standards for collections care and art handling practice strongly preferred. Familiarity with Asian art and collection management systems preferred.

Skills: Ability to manage time effectively for multiple responsibilities, communicate clearly, use hand and small power tools effectively, solve fabrication problems to museum standards. Must have excellent hand skills as well as the ability to maneuver large, heavy objects safely, ability to attend to detail and work in an organized and calm manner. Must be able to work cooperatively as a member of a team.

Physical Requirements: Ability to frequently and safely lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds; and work at heights over eight feet. Physical effort such as pushing, pulling, bending, lifting and moving heavy objects. Ability to see the full range of normal color vision.
