Job Description:

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President/Dean of Student Life, the Assistant/Associate Dean of Student Life and Director of Residence Life and Housing serves as the comprehensive manager for the Department of Residence Life and Housing, that provides a residential education program and housing operation. The incumbent provides strategic direction and leadership of the department, whose mission is to create safe, learning-centered, and inclusive residential communities and will be instrumental in leading the implementation of a new curricular approach to student learning across the Student Life Division.

The incumbent provides direct supervision for the Associate and Assistant Directors and other professional staff. The Assistant/Associate Dean/Director provides oversight for facilities and occupancy management, integrated living-learning efforts, residential curriculum development, student satisfaction and learning outcomes assessment, emergency/on-call support and response, programmatic and operational effectiveness, and long-range planning and budget/revenue management.

Facilities and Operations
Provide innovative and strategic leadership for the operational and outreach function for housing operations.
Collaborate with campus partners on forecasting and long-range planning for residence halls facilities maintenance, renovations, and occupancy.
Oversee the administration of the annual budget.
Manage annual capital improvements and capital budget requests.
Coordinate resident satisfaction assessments, analyze results to form action plan.
Ensure that the department's day-to-day operations include efficient systems to meet professional standards in timely and sensitive response to students', families', and RWU community members' questions, concerns and requests for information regarding policies, housing assignments, facilities, student conflicts and general assistance.
Ensure the efficient and effective coordination of residence hall openings and closings to include collaboration with offices on early arrivals and needed housing during breaks.
Ensure the development and maintenance of accurate, timely, and accessible department publications and website.
Ensure the successful transition of residence hall facilities to summer conferences; collaborate and maintain timely communicate with Director of Conferences concerning summer facilities availability, staffing, and capital projects to support effective conference operations and university net revenue goals.

Residential Education
Lead the department's development of a robust curricular approach to residential education that includes assessment of student learning.
Serve as a member of the University first year and sophomore year experience task forces/initiatives aimed at enhancing students' residential experience and retention.
Ensure staff training that leads to the facilitation of residence hall communities that support students' development of multicultural understanding, and cross-cultural relationships.
Ensure programs/initiatives/community meetings are provided in the residence halls that promote and support student success, student learning, community development, and overall well-being.
Ensure the on-going development of living/learning housing initiatives in partnership with faculty and staff liaisons to create communities based on community interests, and needs. Examples include but are not limited to: LBGTQ LLC, Black LLC, student-proposed LLCs.
Ensure the full utilization of the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA) for feedback and development of residence life policies, programs, and facilities and the leadership development and advisement of the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA)
Ensure staff's educational response and timely follow up to violations of residence hall policies.

Student Support
Advise students and family members in decision-making and provide resource referrals to help support student success and well-being.
Serve on the senior staff on-call team on a rotating basis to support residence life staff responding to emergency situations during the evening and weekend hours. Consult with university staff concerning serious or problematic situations as needed.
Provide and support student recognition initiatives and promote leadership opportunities.
Ensure the development of department systems for staff's timely and sensitive response, outreach, and relationship building for students of concern and on-going tracking of follow-up.

Staff Management

Recruit, train, and supervise staff direct reports. Hold regular meetings with direct reports, lead weekly department staff meetings, and provide appropriate on-boarding and professional development opportunities for staff as needed.
Ensure the professional recruitment, training, and supervision of staff including Associate and Assistant Directors, Coordinators of Residence Education (CORES), Graduate Assistants, Administrative Assistants, Student Resident Assistants; and oversight of Custodians.
Oversee department crisis management protocol and emergency situations in residence halls; work collaboratively with VP of Student Life, AVP/Dean of Student Life, Facilities, Public Safety, Health Services, Counseling Services and off-campus agencies (local authorities, medical facilities/personnel) as needed.

Divisional Leadership

Attend all divisional leadership team, head staff meetings and all division meetings.
Serve as an Administrative/University Hearing Officer or member of the University conduct panel hearing board for high level judicial and Title IX cases as needed.
Be accessible, visible, and present for relevant and occasional campus speakers and athletic events; attend staff/student-planned community development activities and educational events as appropriate.
Chaperone and assist in organization of large, annual, campus-wide programs as needed such as spring weekend, Senior class events, fall orientation, and commencement.
Assist in leading task forces, presenting training topics, and executing divisional and University projects as needed.
Ensure department participation in new student recruitment and orientation events.

Additional Functions
Establish and maintain strong partnerships with colleagues within the division as well as other campus stakeholders including but not limited to Admissions, Environmental Health & Safety, Financial Aid, Bursar's, Registrar's, Information Technology, and Human Resources.

Represent the department on relevant University committees.

Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or supervisor's designee.

Requirements:

Master's Degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration or a related field. Minimum of eight years of experience in residence life and housing with increasing levels of responsibility that include crisis management, budget management, facilities and housing operations, student advising, program planning, and supervision of professional staff.

Supervisory skills which inspire, motivate, and foster a culture in which all staff members are treated with respect, fairness, and professionalism and promotes professional development among the team.

Detail-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as a leader and collaborative member of a team.

Sensitive, diplomatic, and articulate written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to implement problem-solving strategies to manage everyday residential challenges such as crisis response, conflict management, community development, and student/family concerns in a fast-paced environment.

A demonstrated commitment and passion for professional growth in the areas of student learning and development, community development, supporting students' well-being, and best practices in residence life programs and operations.

Knowledge of equity and inclusion issues and laws that impact higher education and particularly community living (all gender spaces, Title IX, affinity based living learning communities, ADA compliance).

Demonstrated commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, and historical inequalities, and strategies for interacting effectively with people different from oneself.

Demonstrated experience using diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services practice (i.e., staffing practices, supervision, training, policies, programs).

Demonstrated experience and commitment to professional growth in best practices in using technology in residence life and student affairs to increase efficiency, accessibility, and quality of housing operations and residence life practices (such as assignments, billing, and judicial database management systems, social media, community development tracking and Microsoft Office Suite).

Involvement in local, regional, and national organizations supporting the mission of Housing, as well as in the field of student affairs (such as ACUHO-I, ACPA, and NASPA).

Availability on weekends and evenings as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration, or other relevant field. Ten or more years of experience in housing systems with increasing levels of responsibility that include crisis management, budget management, facilities and housing operations, student advising, program planning, and supervision of professional staff.

Experience working with a learning outcome based residential curriculum.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and display information in ways that are easy to interpret and spot patterns, trends and correlations. Examples of these representations include charts, graphs, infographics and other pictorial diagrams.

Demonstrated skills in public speaking, facilitating conversations, and presenting to families, students, staff and other constituents.

Experience with student conduct, mediating student conflicts and restorative approaches to conflict resolution.

Experience administering programmatic and operational assessments that has led to department improvements.
