Assistant/Associate Professor of Special Education


The School of Learning and Teaching (SLT), a unit within the College of Education (COE) at Pacific University, Oregon, invites applications for appointment to a 10-month, Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor position, with a focus in Special Education, to teach across programs within the School. Based on the Forest Grove campus of Pacific University, the selected candidate will join a thriving community of teacher-scholars who are committed to the preparation and professional development of outstanding teachers and who strive to live the College’s vision of visionary practice, principled advocacy, and ethical action. Alongside teaching duties, the selected candidate will also play a role in developing and maintaining strong partnerships with our diverse K-12 partner schools and districts, advance a scholarly line of inquiry, and serve on professional and institutional committees.

The Special Education Program is an innovative and effective program. Expertise in low-incidence disability areas (i.e., moderate/severe/profound) and functional, life skills areas are desired along with expertise and experience in assessment, assistive technology, legal issues, cultural competencies and interprofessional collaboration.  Some evening, weekend, and summer teaching as well as local travel will be required.

  1. Teach within and across undergraduate and graduates programs with an equity lens
  2. Demonstrate strong instructional technology skills and experience in distance learning with the ability to teach across different modalities (face-to-face, blended, online - synchronously and asynchronously)
  3. Supervise and mentor teacher candidates during field placements
  4. Work alongside diverse K-12 partner schools and districts, including collaborative opportunities in off-campus settings
  5. Develop / maintain an active research / scholarly agenda
  6. Serve on institutional and professional committees
  7. Participate in the development of programs, curricula, and strategic planning within the School of Learning and Teaching and the College of Education
  1. Collaborate and coordinate with colleagues in instructional delivery
  2. Advise and mentor students



1.  Participate in campus, School, and College faculty meetings

2.  Maintain office hours and timely communications with students

3.  Perform other reasonable duties as assigned



  1. Doctoral degree (PhD / EdD) or ABD in Special Education or a related field
  2. Two years minimum experience teaching or providing direct services to children and youth with disabilities preferred; preference given to someone who also has experience teaching in general education
  3. Demonstrated commitment to, and experience with, working in a culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse setting
  4. Knowledge of best practices in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion
  5. A current or recently expired teaching license in one of the teacher preparation areas offered within the School of Learning and Teaching, including a SPED credential/ endorsement,
  6. A minimum of three years P-12 teaching experience in a diverse work environment
  7. Strong oral and written communication skills
  8. Evidence of emerging (Assistant Professor) or established (Associate Professor) research agenda and publication record
  9. Demonstrated success (Assistant Professor) or expertise (Associate Professor) in the preparation of special educators
  10. Experience working with in-service and pre-service teachers preferred
  11. Ability to work collegially, constructively, and effectively with a variety of stakeholders, groups, and individuals, as well as the ability to work independently
  12. Ability to travel to relevant local school districts and other settings to support SLT initiatives
  13. Experience with edTPA would be an added advantage
