Assistant Director, Athletic Communications

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications position at Colgate is responsible for the effective delivery of communications strategies across all aspects of the assigned athletics department teams and areas.

This individual performs the role of an internal beat reporter, focusing on telling compelling stories in written, digital, video, social media or other innovative formats. The individual is also responsible for developing external media relationships and managing game day media. This individual will also oversee the department's video intern and student assistants.

The impact of this position resonates with Colgate Athletics to parents, friends, alumni and fans from around the world.

Duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications are:
- primary contact for several of Colgate's 25 Division I athletic programs including, but not limited to, men's basketball and additional sports as assigned
- StatCrew software operator for selected sports
- Lead contact for the Patriot League for assigned sports
- Developer of online materials to promote Colgate Athletics
- Key contact working closely with external vendors in maintaining a high quality website
- Coordinator with television, newspaper, and any other media requests, especially in the Central New York area; Promoter of Colgate student-athletes and coaches to provide the best possible experience for those individuals during their time at Colgate
- Primary contact for game day press box and press conference operations
- Contact for all assigned teams for Colgate Athletics website, statistics, history and record books.

Public Relations for assigned sports:
- Timely press releases and press conferences providing accurate information to our media partners
- Media placement with targeted and most appropriate media outlets
- Effective coordination with television, newspaper, and any other media requests, especially in the Central New York area.
- Responsible for maximizing the number of positive media hits and minimizing potentially negative communications with respect to athletics
Game day accountabilities for assigned sports:
- Responsible for preparation of game programs and other printed material; including but not limited to producing of game programs prior to every home athletic event in assigned sports, producing schedule cards, and programs for special events.
- Required to travel with assigned teams as needed in order to execute responsibility for statistics, game write ups, social media, press conferences and all media relations.
Strategic communications accountabilities:
- Assist with the administration of the athletics web site ( and implement the Director of Athletic Communication's plan for on-going development.
- Ensure effective updating and usage of social media and other related platforms for assigned sports.
- Ensure all communications strategies and execution fit within the broader context of Colgate's University-wide communications strategy and plan, as instructed by the Director of Athletic Communications and Director of Athletics.

Marketing and promotions accountabilities for assigned sports:
- Responsible for effective communications and promotion of tickets and other revenue producing channels.
- Responsible for effective communications and promotions of special events, to include games and community involvement
- Responsible for providing effective assistance to special events as needed (e.g. Colgate Hall of Fame induction, All Sport Banquet, President's Club, Philanthropy events, National Girls and Women in Sport recognition).
- Responsible for contributing information to historical archiving of statistics, rosters, and additional information in assigned sports.
- Responsible for effectively serving as a contact for the Patriot League and ECAC Hockey for assigned sports;
- Responsible for effective management, hiring, training and evaluating all student staff and interns year round

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 1 year of experience is required.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

The individual should be a strong communicator and writer, have experience with social media, familiarity with shooting and editing video or a willingness to be trained and a proficiency in desktop publishing (InDesign and Photoshop) and StatCrew software.

The individual must possess a collaborative style and the ability to work effectively within a diverse population. This position is also required to work nights and weekends during athletic seasons as necessary. A current valid driver's license, in accordance with the University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

This position demands an individual who must be flexible to travel and assigned teams for competition as required including weekends and/or holidays.

Must be capable of working collegially and effectively with a diverse group of student-athletes, coaches, staff, media and visitors on a daily basis.

Compliance with NCAA, Patriot League and Colgate rules and regulations is non-negotiable.

Knowledge and commitment to University, League and NCAA regulations; good communication and technology skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a collegiate and/or professional communications/content creation role is preferred.

Experience working in a basketball program is strongly preferred.
