Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Administrative Director, the Assistant Director will be a manager of people, processes, and projects, all related to the development and functioning of the revised Program in General Education. The Assistant Director works closely with other members of the senior leadership team to maintain and promote the quality of the academic offerings; contribute to the strategic planning and design of the Program; and improving the ways in which the Office can support the students who take courses, and the faculty and graduate students who teach them. The Assistant Director manages a team of three grade-55 Course Coordinators responsible for the day-to-day support for the courses.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Managing and overseeing all administrative and academic planning processes for courses in the Program: annual production of the online course catalog for 100+ Gen Ed courses, the section allocation process, and the departmental Access database, analysis of student records to advise students and Resident Deans on graduation requirements.
  • Managing all information and communications about the Program and its offerings, ensuring that they are complete and up-to-date: oversee all communications to faculty and staff regarding course administration; serve as primary liaison to the Office of the FAS Registrar, and to other relevant departments and offices regarding the Program and its courses; responsible for the public-face of the Program, providing oversight and guidance for the Program's digital communications and website as well as content for other relevant publications; and providing data and other information as requested by the Office of the President, the Dean of FAS and/or Harvard College, HPAC, Admissions, Development, etc.
  • Managing a team of three grade-55 Course Coordinators who perform all of the administrative responsibilities for the Program in General Education including all logistical support for courses (staffing, space, field trips, guest speakers, course materials, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Administrative Director.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree. 5+ years of experience in university administration. Direct supervisory experience of full-time staff.
Additional Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education or a related field preferred. Knowledge of undergraduate liberal arts programs strongly preferred. Candidate must be self-motivating, able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and possesses excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.Experience with performance management. Communicates clearly both orally and in writing, experience with public speaking, and has strong interpersonal skills. Able to build positive relationships and work professionally with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Access. Experience with databases, statistical software (e.g., SPSS), and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
Additional Information
The Program in General Education is a set of courses and requirements outside the concentration (major) that all 6,500 undergraduates in Harvard College must fulfill. Courses in General Education seek to ask big picture questions, illuminate intellectual blind spots, and unsettle hidden assumptions, all with the aim of helping students weave together what they are learning in the classroom with the public and private lives they will lead after leaving the College. The Program is in the midst of a transition from one set of requirements to another and thus the Office is in an exciting moment of change and transition. The successful candidate for this position has the opportunity to look with fresh eyes at the processes and policies that have been in place, and to contribute in positive and creative ways to improving how the office serves faculty, students, and staff colleagues across campus.
