Assistant Provost of Instruction, AFREAPROVAA

The Assistant Provost of Instruction (API) reports to the Provost, the Chief Academic Officer of the College, and serves as a member of the Provost council. The API, working in conjunction with the Provost, has primary responsibility for student success and learning. This includes all academic programs and disciplines as well as related academic support services. The API provides leadership for the academic leaders of Seven divisions: Fine & Applied Arts and Communication; Health Sciences; Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Library; Liberal Arts; Business and Technology; and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Public Services and Continuing Education/Extended Learning. In addition to these divisions, the API works with the Associate Vice Presidents to provide leadership for the academic affairs and initiatives.

The API leads the strategic planning for Academic Affairs, and is responsible for developing, in collaboration with the Deans, an annual plan for accomplishing the objectives of all operations reporting to the API. The API has responsibility to see that the College continues to develop curriculum to maintain the currency of its programs, that all of its regional centers operate in an effective as well as efficient mode, that all auxiliary enterprises operate in a fiscally sound manner, and that high school and university partnerships are maintained and strengthened. The API provides strong leadership with high expectations for the Deans, and works collaboratively to accomplish specific goals as set by the Provost and President.

  • Provides leadership for the planning, delivery and assessment of academic programs which are accomplished in collaboration with the Faculty, Administration and Staff throughout the institution.
  • Works with the Provost, Academic Deans, Faculty, and Professional Staff to ensure that all academic policies, programs, and curriculum support the educational mission of the College.
  • Ensures that Academic Affairs and Student Affairs work collaboratively to provide student programs at the College which promote student development and academic success.
  • Establishes budget priorities in collaboration with administration from Student Affairs, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, Enrollment Management, and Information Technology.
  • Ensures the primacy of the academic mission in all College decision-making, including, but not limited to infrastructure (facilities and technology), budget, hiring, and communications, both internal and external.
  • Sets high standards for assessing the quality of programs, services, teaching of the curriculum and student learning.
  • Identifies new and ongoing needs and initiates new programs and activities to respond appropriately to the needs of the College; maintains a responsive, entrepreneurial, and innovative climate.
  • Stimulates the development, implementation and assessment of annual plans, academic and long-range plans, including continuous assessment of the College's long-term enrollment plan, advancement of diversity and the integration of technological tools that enhance a learning environment.
  • Recommends successful candidates for new and replacement positions within Academic Affairs.
  • In conjunction with the individual cost center managers, develops and manages Academic Affairs budgets in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the allocation of both human and fiscal resources within Academic Affairs.
  • Becomes involved in, and takes leadership responsibility for, other tasks as assigned by the Provost or the President.



Must have demonstrated sustained, inclusive and decisive leadership in higher education in positions of increasing administrative responsibility.

Minimum of 3 years' experience in academic affairs administrative leadership.

Teaching experience at the community college level desired.

Leadership, planning, negotiation, financial management, organizational, and supervisory skills as well as a demonstrated ability to manage a complex academic organization and work effectively with colleagues across all units of the campus required.

Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills a must as well as experience with collective bargaining agreements.


Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university.

Computer and standard office software/equipment.
