Associate Director, Facilities Planning and Operations

This position manages the daily operations related to construction, engineering, and facility operations for the various facilities within the Division of Biology and Medicine's portfolio. The position will heavily rely on multi-faceted communications in order to efficiently and effectively coordinate resources, expertise, and services to continuously support a complex research operation. The individual works with faculty, staff, and students in developing, planning, designing, and executing projects in partnership within the University's Facilities Management Department. The position manages, independently or in collaboration with the Director, areas such as equipment planning, space management, capital budget preparation, and supporting University initiatives related to the Division's portfolio. Further, the individual represents the interests of the Division's customer base in addressing their operational needs by developing a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with the University's Facilities Management Department to troubleshoot and problem solve issues within the various facilities in a timely manner. Additionally, the position works with entities such as Public Safety and Environmental Health & Safety to ensure compliance to University, local, state, and federal policies and practices within the Division's operation.


  • BA or BS degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or closely related field with 8-12 years of related experience or combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in laboratory planning, design, and construction preferred.
  • Knowledge of research and teaching facilities and utilization requirements preferred.
  • Proven working knowledge of laboratory safety and security issues (including HVAC and MEP systems) building codes, construction methods, and scientific research operations required.
  • Experience with and commitment to working in and promoting a customer service driven operation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite (including MS Projects), and various database applications.
  • Proven record of excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to be available on weekends and/or evenings when necessary.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets.
  • A self-starter; ability to multi-task.
  • A management approach that values the strengthening of the team.
  • An assertive attitude with respect to meeting and accomplishing assigned responsibilities.
