The Associate Director of Instructional Technology Services provides leadership and operational direction both within the Instructional Technology Services unit and in Office of Information Technology (OIT) as a whole. The Associate Director supports the mission of the university by helping to set and advance OIT strategic goals that align with those of the institution. The Associate Director is responsible for making programmatic and financial decisions and leading strategic and tactical initiatives that address emerging campus needs. The Associate Director is expected to foster OIT values across the organization and create an environment of cooperation and collegiality within Instructional Technology Services, with other OIT units, and across the campus community.

The Associate Director provides leadership and direction for Instructional Technology Services which provides a number of services including classroom technology, computer labs, and e-learning technology coordination. The Associate Director is responsible for oversight and direct management of staff within ITS, managing ITS budget/finance issues and ensuring operational processes are within accepted best practices and in alignment with support requirements. The Associate Director will participate and lead OIT projects and take ownership of OIT functions and processes providing appropriate reports with metrics addressing the efficiency and effectiveness of services provided. The Associate Director is responsible for ensuring that members of ITS understand the overall structure and operation of OIT as a whole in order to contribute fully to the mission of the organization. The Associate Director is expected to work with university colleges, students and faculty on various instructional technology services including (learning space design, classroom technology, e-learning, course management system, computer teaching facilities, and technology integration into curriculum) to ensure needs related to the support of technology in education are being met.


Education: This position requires a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. ITIL Foundation Certification preferred.

Experience: This position requires a minimum of 5 years of related professional experience and 5 years of related managerial experience.

The incumbent must have specific skills, knowledge, and abilities in the following areas:


  • Experience managing complex information technology services organizations within a university setting.
  • A commitment to staff development and the skills necessary to provide mentoring and support for continuous career development.
  • Experience as a manager or supervisor of technical professionals and projects within a technology environment.
  • The ability to manage fiscal resources both individually and in collaboration with members of a leadership team.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and implementing new practices and technologies to improve an organization's overall programs and services.
  • Excellent customer service skills as demonstrated by the ability to work directly with constituents and vendors to understand and resolve function and/or technical issues and concerns and meet customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of individuals, including senior technical and non-technical leadership.
  • The ability to plan for and execute decisions to ensure the unit is fully staffed with personnel that have the skills necessary to respond with solutions that support university and OIT goals.

Planning and Priority Management

  • Experience in preparing and implementing mid- to long-range plans based on multiple-sources of input that reflect the overall goals of the university, OIT, and the unit for which the position is responsible.
  • Experience that reflects the ability to: be flexible, provide realistic resource requirements, develop methods for prioritizing ever-changing needs, create measurable objectives, and be accountable.
  • The ability to prioritize multiple requests for services from a broad constituent base including Vice Presidents, Deans, and Directors of major administrative units (e.g., Academics, Finance, Human Resources, Student Affairs, Facilities).

Emerging Technologies

  • Should be able to provide current information on the technologies and tools available that will help meet university and OIT goals.
  • Should have experience developing and maintaining vendor relationships to ensure: purchase of appropriate products and services; reasonable prices; and excellent service and support.
  • Must be able to stay abreast of emerging technologies to keep the university as close to state-of-the-art as feasible.

Interpersonal Skills and Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with non-technical and technical audiences.
  • A commitment to communicating effectively within the unit, across the OIT organization, and with the campus community.
  • The ability and willingness to promote and sustain awareness of the services offered by and responsibilities of all units with OIT.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Be able to provide evidence of leadership in providing quality customer service.
  • Have a commitment to service as an organizational value and an ability to assist staff in reflecting the value of service in their day-to-day activities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining collegial relationships within OIT and with other units on campus.

Instructional Technology Services Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience as a manager or supervisor of technical professionals and projects
  • Experience and technical competence in classroom/audio visual technology, computer hardware, operating systems (e.g. Windows, Mac) and software applications.
  • Experience supporting E-learning technologies and their application to university instruction
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of best practices in project management, operations, and continuous service improvement


Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $114,000.
