Class Adviser

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study provides a distinctive liberal arts education for a diverse student body. Our faculty foster passionate intellectual commitments from learners and prepare them for a world in which managing knowledge is key to success. Guided by the philosophy that self-directed learning is the key goal, the faculty seek to cultivate an environment conducive to intellectual exploration across traditional academic disciplines, and they insist on active student engagement in developing the direction of their own education. Our highly specialized and deeply engaged advisers guide students in their intellectual explorations toward an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Counsel approximately 400 Gallatin students including first year and transfer students with the goal of enhancing their academic experience and retaining them as students; develop strategies to ensure that students are able to complete degree programs; provide advisement, monitor academic progress; discuss requirements and electives, evaluate degree requirement petitions and time limit exceptions for program completion, identify and provide resources for students at risk. Collaborate with and support primary academic advisers in working with their advisees. Ensure that students receive timely and appropriate academic advice. Develop workshops to support the academic program, foster community, and encourage student leadership. Collaborate with the other Class Advisers and the Offices of Student Services and Student Affairs on graduation, orientation and other school-wide events. Teach one course a year.

Required Education:
ABD (All But Dissertation)

Preferred Education:

Required Experience:
3 years of relevant increasingly responsible professional level experience including experience with academic advising, developing policies and procedures, teaching, and staff supervision or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience:
Experience counseling students.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills. Strong leadership and planning skills. Knowledge of spreadsheet software.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience with interdisciplinary programs. Working knowledge of Excel.
