Job Description:

Distinguishing Job Characteristics:

Applicants must be able to perform general duties that are of a technical nature, in a specialized area. Dispatches officers, answers routine questions and performs clerical duties. Applicants must have the ability to serve on-call twenty four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, and may work varied shifts as assigned. An employee assigned to this classification applies technical knowledge and skills in the area of specialization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1) Radio Systems:
o Must be able to operate a two-way radio system.
o Receives and sends messages from police officers, safety specialists, administrative, and outside emergency personnel.
o Must have the ability to provide ongoing communications to personnel by monitoring radio messages, LEADS printouts, news networks, and other information received from outside agencies.
o Must have the ability to create and maintain a radio log of all important radio information during a work period.

2) Public Safety - Systems:
o Must be proficient in the operation with the following systems:
* Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS)
* National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
* Computerized Criminal History (CCH) database for criminal record and background checks.
* Law Enforcement Officer Toolkit (LEOT)
* Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OHLEG)
* RAVE system
* Simplex alarm monitoring
* PA Systems
* AMAG system
* Datatel system
* Public Safety Databases
o Must have the ability to maintain the confidentiality of student records, police reports, and other sensitive information.
o College Parking Citations:
* Must have the ability to check citation information in the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OHLEG) and enter information into college citations and databases.

3) Multi-Tasking and Divided Attention Skills:
o Receives and responds to calls for service as a result of telephone calls, system alarms, and customer interaction. This information must be processed and appropriate personnel must be dispatched to resolve the situation.
o Contacts outside agencies to provide or gather information about Columbus State campuses and off-site locations.

4) Customer Service:
o Provides customer service to Columbus State students, faculty, staff, administrators, and guests.
o Creates and validates Cougar ID cards.
o Gathers and provides accurate directions for guests.
o Accepts, logs, retrieves, and returns lost and found property.
o Issues Columbus State parking passes.
o Receives, resolves, or forwards complaints from guests when reported to Public Safety.
o Takes and forwards messages to Public Safety personnel

5) Miscellaneous Duties:
o Gathers, enters, and verifies information in Public Safety databases.
o Compiles room opening list.
o Reviews, verifies, and prints citation histories.
o Creates and drafts correspondence with correct grammar and punctuation.
o Accepts and date stamps key request forms.
o Notifies employees when keys are completed.
o Distributes keys to employees.
o Performs additional tasks as needed.

6) Work Schedule:
o Maintains an assigned work schedule.
o Exhibits regular and predictable attendance.
o Works overtime as needed to meet workload demands.

Other Duties & Responsibilities: The applicant must have the ability to provide clerical assistance to the Department of Public Safety as needed.

Usual Physical Demands: The incumbent of this position typically exhibits the physical demands identified in the Functional Job Analysis on file in the College's Human Resources Department and which is periodically reviewed and updated. Physical demands listed in the Functional Job Analysis are not job qualification standards, but are used to help the College assess and determine reasonable accommodations for otherwise qualified individuals covered by the American's with Disabilities Act.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently stands for extended periods of time, and occasionally sits and walks. The employee frequently converses with others in person and my telephone. The employee occasionally reaches with hands and arms and stoops or kneels to file documents. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions: Normal office working conditions with the occasional exposure to criminals or other dangerous persons.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Two-way radio and telephone system operational procedures, operation of the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), operation of Computerized Criminal History (CCH) system, standard office practices and procedures, college Computer software programs and applications to include word processing, databases, and spreadsheets, Law Enforcement Officer Toolkit (LEOT), Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OHLEG). Skill in: Verbal and written communications, operation of general office equipment, customer service, general typing, application of job software programs and databases, filing documents in alphabetical, numerical, chronological and subject order, maintaining work records, application of technical skills in radio, telephone systems and LEADS operations. Ability to: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public, exhibit a pleasant telephone manner and answer routine inquiries, maintain confidential and sensitive information, exercise sound judgment in dealing with stressful situations, exhibit good understanding of various emergency and other situations, learn operation of telephone and radio system to receive and relay information accurately and rapidly.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Applicants must also have the ability to obtain and maintain required certifications: Dispatching Certification. Law Enforcement Automated Data System Certification. State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Additional Information: Applicants must have a State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license. The employee must be insurable to operate a vehicle, as a condition of initial and continued employment. In addition to meeting the minimum qualification for this position, applicants must be able to successfully pass the National Public Safety Dispatch Inventory Exam, background investigation, drug examination, polygraph examination, psychological examination and medical examinations.
