Digital Strategist & Web Producer

The Digital Strategist & Web Producer develops and implements digital communication strategies for Brown's websites and web applications, including the University's flagship website,

Reporting to the Director of Web & Digital Communication Strategy, the Digital Strategist is part of a web and digital team comprising UX designers, front-end developers and other digital strategists and web producers.

The Digital Strategist works to solve complex communication, user experience and technology challenges across Brown's web presence. The Digital Strategist partners with colleagues in the Office of University Communications (OUC) and with campus units across Brown to assess goals and devise strategies designed to achieve the University's web communication and digital marketing objectives. Working collaboratively, the Digital Strategist leads information architecture, content strategy and user experience efforts for a variety of web and digital projects. The Digital Strategist should be well-versed in analytics and measurement techniques and serve as a champion for web accessibility and digital best practices to the University community.

The Digital Strategist builds high-quality, sustainable websites within the context of Brown's enterprise web content management system, Drupal. The Digital Strategist has expert-level knowledge of Drupal site-building, including extensive experience with content types, views, taxonomies, blocks, menus, themes, and a wide range of contributed modules. The Digital Strategist also contributes to managing the University's Drupal CMS and associated design themes as digital products through planning, production, assessment and evaluation.

In addition to Drupal site building, the Digital Strategist plays a role in supporting the CMS by offering level two support for web content editors. The Digital Strategist is responsible for responding to issues escalated from the OUC Client Relations team and the CIS help desk.

The Digital Strategist should have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, demonstrate initiative, flexibility and a collaborative nature, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high quality product and services. The Digital Strategist should be a conceptual thinker capable of creating, and communicating the value of, digital solutions.


  • Digital strategy for and University digital communication platforms
  • Develop and implement unit-level webs strategies informed by data, institutional priorities and digital best practices to bring university messaging to life in a clear and compelling way
  • Consult on and continually work towards an innovative content strategy, user experience, information architecture and visual design for
  • Help identify key audiences, user journeys and opportunities to unify Brown's digital ecosystem
  • Design and conduct usability tests to ensure Brown's website is user-centric and based on the real-world needs and demands of website visitors
  • Maintain and enhance search engine optimization and speed on Brown University websites
  • Use monitoring and testing tools (e.g. CrazyEgg, HotJar, SiteImprove, etc.) to identify usability and web communication challenges; propose and implement solutions in collaboration with the appropriate web content editor(s)
  • Consult with web content editors on optimal information architecture and site navigation to ensure a cohesive user experience across the University's website
  • Web and digital production, product management, support and maintenance
  • Assist in managing the University's CMS as a digital product; enhance the features, functionality and user experience of and other externally-facing University website
  • Configure and edit University websites, using Brown's web content management systems
  • Edit and create clean, maintainable code using HTML and CSS that renders properly across major web browsers
  • Ensure the timely and successful delivery of web solutions aligned with partner needs and institutional objectives
  • Be responsive to incoming requests and partner with campus units on digital communication needs and initiativeProvide level two support to Brown web content editors; research, diagnose, troubleshoot and identify solutions to resolve customer issues
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508) and work to enforce these standards across University websites
  • Follow standard procedures for prompt, clear escalation of high severity issues to the appropriate groups or individuals 

  • Communicate the progress of digital communication initiatives to internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide guidance to units regarding Google Analytics and search engine optimization
  • Migrate content from one web content management system to another
  • Documentation and training
  • Produce self-service resources for clients, using multimedia, documentation, web and knowledge management tools
  • Perform individual and group training sessions as needed
  • Manage user access to the Brown web CMS by creating accounts and setting permissions
  • Regularly update skills and training in web best practices, innovation and industry standards
  • Participate in professional development and training opportunities in digital strategy, web accessibility, communication/marketing, CMS technology, Google Analytics and SEO
  • Engage with industry peers through newsletters, blogs and digital networks to stay abreast of digital communication trends and concerns

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and three to five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Proficiency with Drupal or another enterprise web CMS, including advanced site-building ability and broad knowledge of contributed modules
  • Demonstrated experience with digital strategy and UX and UI principles
  • Expert-level knowledge of HTML and experience with CSS
  • Strong analytical, technical and project management skills
  • Working knowledge of web technologies and user experience conventions
  • Experience with Google Analytics, search engine optimization (SEO) and web/social media integration
  • Extensive knowledge of web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.0 AA and Section 508
  • Deep understanding of web communication and the role of web content in integrated communication campaigns
  • Understanding of web design/development concepts and processes
  • Customer support experience in a complex organization, such as a large corporation or university
  • Strong communications skills; demonstrated ability to communicate and present effectively
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects at a time while maintaining attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with media and image editing software
