Director of Marketing Strategy

The Marketing Communications operation at Brown University is dedicated to providing value and expertise to campus units by delivering tailored solutions that align with unit's goals and the institution's mission. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications within the Office of University Communications, the Director of Marketing Strategy serves as the lead strategist for high-impact, multi-channel marketing campaigns for academic and administrative units, taking a digital-first approach that ensures shareable content is optimized for search and driven by key performance indicators.

The Director of Marketing Strategy oversees a team that provides the following for high-impact marketing projects: strategic marketing planning, video production, photography, digital marketing, social media and editorial management. The Director works closely with the AVP to support the marketing needs of a range of campus partners within an integrated team of more than 40 marketing and communications professionals. The team led by the Director of Marketing Strategy sits at the intersection of teams within the Marketing Communications operation that deliver cohesive marketing strategies; content strategy and editorial development; visual identity and multi-platform visual design; web and digital communications strategy and front-end development; client relations; print production; and mail services.

The Director position is responsible for leading his/her team of content creators in support of Brown's outreach for areas including faculty and student recruitment, alumni and parent engagement, fundraising, and campus community engagement. The Director maintains strong relationships across campus and stays current on marketing best practices, analytics and trends. The Director of Marketing Strategy is charged with leading his/her team in collaboration with other teams throughout Marketing Communications to deliver creative marketing strategies and marketing vehicles for showcasing Brown's mission, priorities and community across the full range of media to a wide array of audiences.

As a direct supervisor and mentor to a team of staff members, the Director conducts performance evaluations, sets individual and team goals, and supports the professional development of staff.



- Required: Bachelor's degree

- Preferred: Advanced degree


- Minimum 7 years of experience in strategic marketing role in a fast-paced environment

- Excellent management skills, including the ability to inspire staff members

- Proven experience overseeing multi-channel content production, especially multimedia

- Professional experience planning and executing digital marketing campaigns with measurable results to advance the goals of an organization

- Demonstrated experience analyzing and reporting on multi-channel marketing metrics, including proficiency developing dashboards and/or other mechanisms for tracking performance indicators

- Experience working in a creative environment

- Proficiency in managing multiple projects with competing deadlines

- Experience with online collaboration tools for project management a plus

- Job Competencies

- Extensive knowledge of print and digital marketing principles

- Superb verbal and written communication skills

- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

- Strong visual aesthetic

- Demonstrated analytical skills and business acumen

- Broad interest in and understanding of higher education issues

The Director of Marketing Strategy is the second senior-most leadership role for guiding strategic marketing in the Office of University Communications (behind the AVP for Marketing Communications) and plays an integral role in establishing and measuring the marketing goals of multiple campus partners at Brown. The Director of Marketing Strategy also plays a critical role in guiding the quality and effectiveness of creative marketing campaigns and collateral within the Office of University Communications.
