Lecturer in Public Affairs

The new Undergraduate Program in Public Affairs at UCLA Luskin seeks applications for a temporary, part-time (non-Senate) lecturer position during the 2018-2019 academic year.

The lecturer will teach a required introductory course titled "Power, Politics, and Policy Change in the U.S." This course provides an introduction to the key institutions of government, politics, and policy in U.S., covering their history, contemporary forms, and internal dynamics. In the course, students should learn to analyze how ideas and power are contested in the processes of social change and political conflict. The course introduces students not only to the various scales and branches of government but also institutions that exercise power and influence in public decision making and social action, such as corporations, unions, media, social movements, and civil society. The course examines topics such as institutional behavior, logic of collective action, interest groups, and the ideas, practices, and limits of liberal democracy.

Responsibilities include developing the syllabus and course; lecturing; holding regularly scheduled office hours; being responsive and helpful to students; developing assignments, papers, and/or exams; grading assignments, papers and/or exams; and managing teaching assistants.

We seek candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. A Ph.D. in Public Policy, Political Science, Political Economy, Sociology or related field is preferred. Ph.D. students who have advanced to candidacy, have teaching experience, and excellent teaching evaluations may also be considered.
