Senior Counsel (Higher Education)

The Senior Counsel will provide a high level of professional legal advice and service on a broad variety of subject matters arising from the operation of Title IX participating higher education institutions. S/he has a broad substantive skill-set, plus the interpersonal strengths, resourcefulness and drive to handle directly the wide ranging routine legal needs of the Company's institutions as well as the Company's home office functional departments. The Senior Counsel will report to the Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Regulatory and Compliance within the General Counsel's Office.

  • Provide legal support for five Title IV Institutions located in both the United States and Caribbean
  • Work collaboratively with appropriate institutional departments to provide legal research, writing and analytical support and contract review/negotiation of affiliate agreements and other transactional documents
  • Advise on sponsored research, contracting, compliance, and other matters related to higher education and for-profit higher education issues
  • Coordinate and monitor issues related to FERPA, HIPAA and student privacy issues
  • Interpret regulations, policies, procedures, principles and practices to support institutional goals
  • Prepare training materials and conduct training on a variety of higher educational issues to small and large groups
  • Assist in the development and modification of policies, procedures and handbooks
  • Provide guidance related to investigations, academic misconduct issues and disciplinary processes
  • Assist and manage outside counsel as needed
  • Completes other duties as assigned

  • J. D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • Must be an active member in good standing with the Illinois State bar
  • At least eight (8) years prior experience as an attorney practicing in a law firm or corporate in-house legal experience, with at least three (3) years' experience in higher education
  • Must be able to exercise sound judgment and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess potential for risk and opportunity
  • Exemplary analytical and interpretation skills; strong legal research, writing, negotiation and organizational skills which produce persuasive legal advice and recommendations regarding complex and sensitive matters
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with clients at all levels of the organization, including senior management
  • Capacity to work independently and efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail
  • Possesses strong work ethic and customer service orientation with high professional ewthics and integrity
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new areas of law
