Social Media Specialist

The Marketing Communications operation at Brown University is dedicated to providing value and expertise to campus units by delivering tailored solutions that align with a unit's goals and the institution's mission. Reporting to the Director of Marketing Strategy within Marketing Communications, the Social Media Specialist serves as the primary manager of central social media efforts and a guide to offices across campus. The Specialist does this while ensuring that the University's social presence is aligned with Brown's strategic priorities and public positioning.

The Social Media Specialist manages the University's primary social media platforms as part of a coordinated external communications effort, and guides and supports departmental social media users campus-wide in the most effective practices in social media to achieve their engagement goals. With a focus on producing micro videos and other innovative approaches to visual storytelling, this role is also responsible for creating original content and curating dynamic content from other users on mobile-first and mobile-only platforms.


  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of demonstrated success developing and implementing social media content in a professional role, and in qualifying and quantifying results
  • Demonstrated success using emerging technologies to meet communication goals
  • Demonstrated success managing Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms for higher education, business, political or other clients
  • Experience measuring, analyzing, and reporting social media metrics
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Strong visual aesthetic and experience with multimedia storytelling
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to inspire other communicators
  • Broad interest in and understanding of higher education
