About the Position:
The Vice President for Strategic Advancement works to integrate communications, development, and institutional effectiveness functions to advance the District's mission. Reporting to the District Chancellor, the Vice President works closely and collaboratively with the executive leadership team to help create and provide tools and strategies for continuous improvement.

Departments reporting to the Vice President:

  • Institutional Research, Analytics, and Effectiveness;
  • Development (includes the Foundation, Grants, and Events); and
  • Marketing and Communications (Web Site, Print Communications, Social Media, Outreach, Graphics, Video Production, Media Relations, and Government Relations)

The Strategic Advancement office is responsible for activities that build support and lasting relationships among internal and external constituents; this includes students, employees, community members, public office holders, alumni, donors, media, and friends of the college.

Essential Functions:

Leadership for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning

  • Provides direction to the Director for Institutional Research, Analytics, and Effectiveness, including conceptualizing research programs, and analyzing, evaluating, and recommending actions based on evidence. Works with the Director to evaluate and recommend instruments and methodologies, surveys, and other research approaches.
  • Coordinates key institution-wide planning processes and provide leadership for institutional effectiveness and strategic initiatives.
  • Acts as a strategic advisor to the leadership team for the purpose of developing and implementing cross-functional strategies supporting the district's mission.
  • Champions the development of a sustained "culture of evidence" in support of student success and continuous improvement, as well as for marketing and operational activities.
  • Collaborates on preparing documentation for NWCCU accreditation.

Leadership for Marketing and Communications

  • Provides direction to the Director for Marketing and Communications, with responsibility for the District's multi-media marketing and communication programs.
  • Ensures that the District's strategic goals, objectives, and performance outcomes are effectively communicated to external and internal audiences.
  • Ensures that marketing and communications efforts are informed by data, and consistent with the priorities of the District; assesses effectiveness and recommends adjustments.

Leadership for Development

  • Working with the Director of Development and Foundation Board, provides oversight and leadership for developing and implementing a comprehensive program of friend and fundraising initiatives and campaigns.
  • Integrates District priorities into development and funding practices.
  • Develops and cultivates new and existing donor relationships, including individual, corporate, governmental, and community foundations.
  • Provides oversight and leadership to the Director for Development and the outreach and operations of the Foundation and Development office. This includes oversight of comprehensive tracking records and analysis of results as well as oversight of endowments, fund accounts, investment accounts, operating budgets, fiscal reports, scholarships, and annual audits.
  • Assists in recruiting, orienting, and providing guidance to Foundation Board members.

Support Government Relations

  • Directly supports the Chancellor and Presidents by providing strategic and functional support to government relations.
  • Establishes relationships with local officials, members of the legislature, and others whose policies and recommendations may relate to the District.
  • Advocates for the District's interests; builds relationships with other organizations and entities whose interests are similar.
  • Monitors and communicates legislation and public policy issues that may affect the college.


  • Provides direction and oversight to the budgets within the division, assuring ethical stewardship of both state and donor funds.
  • Provides direction and oversight to staff management functions, including hiring; recommending changes in positions; evaluations; employee development; and other human resource management
Credentials Required:
  • Master's Degree, preferably in public administration, business, educational administration, non-profit management, or a related field. (Bachelor's Degree and significant work experience may substitute for a master's degree, at the District's discretion.)
  • Minimum of five years of progressive leadership responsibilities, preferably in higher education.
  • Successful experience managing development activities and campaigns; experience in volunteer board leadership, campaign strategy development, direct fundraising experience with individual, corporations, and foundations.
  • Experience developing strategic internal and external communications, and managing a communications team.
  • Experience analyzing and communicating complex data for continuous improvement activities.
  • Experience working with executive leadership, employee groups, and community leaders.

  • Knowledge and understanding of budget practices and investment principles with the ability to analyze information for reports, monitors accounts, and organize data into effective and meaningful oral and written presentations.

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time administrative exempt district position. Evening and weekends will occasionally be required. Frequent travel back and forth between campuses will occur. The Pierce College District offers a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision, sick leave, and vacation. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The anticipated starting date is February 01, 2019.
