JOB SUMMARY

The primary role of the Academic Tutor is to provide content-specific assistance in the learning process to individual or group of students. This position requires the employee to have excellent communication, and social skills and the ability to adapt his or her teaching methods to meet the needs of the student. 

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  •  Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of content, at all levels
  • Provide students with assistance in all stages of presentations and assignments
  • Use various teaching strategies to tutor
  • Keep records of appointments and student progress
  • Attend a mandatory tutor orientation at the beginning of each semester
  • Provide insight into academic needs of students and suggest strategies for addressing areas of student concern (i.e., learning, classroom behavior)
  • Monitor students and maintain a safe learning environment during program activities
  • Motivate and support students through positive feedback and reinforcement
  • Contribute to the college-going culture through informal mentoring with students

Non-Essential Functions:

Student Tutors may be asked to assist with additional tasks to support various departments in the college.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Writing tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in Composition I and/or II. Be prepared to discuss at least two samples of writing that you have done in a college-level course. Have excellent essay writing and grammar skills.

Biology tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in General Biology, or Anatomy and Physiology I or II, or Microbiology (depending on tutoring subject). Expert and responsible use of microscopes and anatomy models.

Chemistry tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in General Chemistry, Introductory Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry (depending on tutoring subject). In the case of an embedded tutor, be available for hands-on lab assistance a couple of hours per week.

Computer Skills tutor: Good academic standing (A or B) in any Information Technology course.

Be highly skilled in Microsoft applications and basic computer skills.

JOB STANDARDS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or in-progress 
  • Proficiency in use of Google Suite and Microsoft Suite
  • Community college experience and knowledge of Banner software preferred
  • Have A's and B's in the coursework that you are going to tutor in
  • Be available to work a minimum of 4 hours a week
  • Be able to communicate clearly
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Be enrolled in a college or university, preferred
  • Be able to collaborate with teachers, and students

Either the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland or MHEC/Athens campus.
