Assistant Dean of Students

This position is an on-campus, full-time, 12-month, Administrative appointment with an annual salary of $82,817.66.

The Assistant Dean of Students will serve as a member of the Division for Student Services Leadership Team and work to align the goals, priorities, and learning outcomes of the Office of the Dean of Students with the mission, vision, values, and student learning outcomes of the Division and Institutional priorities. This position provides the Dean with general management support and coordination for major programs within the Dean of Student's Office which include but are not limited to overseeing the student discipline system and serving as chief student conduct officer for the college; support the management of the RISE initiative, addressing and resolving student complaints, including discrimination and harassment; processing student grievances; providing direct supervision of administrators within Athletics and Student Life; serving as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator and implementing the college’s Title IX pregnancy support program; and reviewing and making recommendations to the Vice President for Student Services regarding policies, procedures, and programs that affect students and campus life.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of the RISE program. Serve as the administrative lead for the RISE summer Bridge program, working collaboratively with the FYE leadership and RISE committee structures for the success of this program.
  • Assist in administering the student discipline system; reviewing and updating all policies and procedures governing the discipline system; directing the resolution of all conduct code violations; ensures training of students and staff serving on student discipline committees; manages disciplinary files; and communicates outcomes to those involved. 
  • Provide organization and direction for student conflict resolution processes.
  • Work under the Dean of Student’s direction to respond to and resolve student concerns regarding college and faculty related issues as they relate to the Student Handbook, including the Student Code of Conduct; complaint processes; grievance processes; and harassment or discrimination.
  • Assist in providing advocacy and/or mediation to address and resolve student issues.
  • Aid in the supervision of administrators overseeing the departments of Athletics and Student Life.
  • Review all student services policies, procedures, and programming and make recommendations to the Dean of Students and the Vice President for Student Services.
  • Aid the Dean of Students in providing leadership in the development of innovative policies, procedures, programs, systems, goals, objectives, and priorities in support of areas supervised.
  • Assist in the planning and organization of Commencement, Honors Convocation, new student orientation (S.O.A.R.), Convocation, scholarship receptions, and other campus events.
  • Serves on the Financial Aid Appeals Committee, Latino Advisory Council, Enrollment Management Team, Crisis Management Team, and Concern and Response Team. 
  • Serves as campus liaison to Courage Connection and other community organizations at the request of the college.
  • Provide oversight of Deans’ List preparation and Academic Opportunities for Underrepresented Students’ Scholarship recruitment and selection processes.
  • Serve as a Title IX Deputy Coordinator.
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students, help oversee the budget preparation process and proper administration of all budgetary matters for areas under the Dean of Students.
  • Aid in ensuring all areas under the Dean of Students comply with FERPA, Title IX, Title IV, the Clery Act, ADA, and other federal and state regulations.
  • In support of the Dean of Students, perform personnel management functions, including oversight of personnel selection, training, and evaluation; ensuring departmental practices comply with college policy; and analyzing and recommending appropriate staffing levels.
  • Represents Parkland College and the Student Services division at campus and community events.
  • Serve as the Dean of Students’ designee in their absence.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Experience in administration, program and personnel management, and student development.
  • Experience with student discipline processes, including informal resolution theory and practices, preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with diverse students, employees, and community members.
  • Ability to strategically and sensitively ask questions, evaluate responses, weigh information, and determine responsibility, with an eye toward maximizing educational opportunities consistent with college philosophy.
  • Knowledge of education administration and the ability to advance objectives and goals set by Parkland College.
  • Knowledge of current federal and state laws pertaining to higher education (e.g., Title VI, Title IX, ADA, FERPA, veteran services).
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as within a team framework.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the community college mission.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
