UTSA's Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies (REGSS) is a community-centered department born from student, faculty, and staff activism. We are committed to working with UTSA students and the larger San Antonio community to create a socially just world. Our curriculum, research, creative scholarship and service to the community reflect our diasporic, decolonial and intersectional approach toward the study of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality in education, humanities, music and the arts, and the social sciences. We are dedicated to preparing students to be agents of change who will positively transform society. The Department brings together three programs: African American, Mexican American, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. We offer BA and minor in African American Studies; a BA in and minor in Mexican American Studies; and BA and minor in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. We also offer a graduate certificate in Mexican American Studies.

UTSA's Department of History (HIS) consists of frontline research scholars exploring subjects in all parts of the world from the U.S. and Latin America to the Atlantic world, the Indian Ocean, and beyond. HIS teaching programs feature a team of innovative, award-winning professors grounded in advanced pedagogies and committed to student success. In addition to our popular History B.A. the department offers a social studies concentration for students seeking teaching certification. HIS also offers a History M.A., one of the largest and most robust graduate programs in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, where a significant number of students receive funding, including the department's prestigious Nau scholarships.

Position Description

The University of Texas at San Antonio's Departments of Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies (REGSS) and History invite applications for a joint faculty position in African American Studies at the Assistant or Associate level beginning Fall 2025. The Departments seek exceptional candidates with an interdisciplinary focus on Black experiences, culture, history, life writing, or performance studies broadly defined. We are particularly interested in scholars who employ intersectional, transnational, social movements, digital humanities, and/or social justice-focused methodologies in research and teaching. We are additionally interested in scholars who illustrate a conversance in Black-Brown articulations of history, culture, or contemporary forms of allyship. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of innovative and effective teaching, and an active research agenda centered on communities of Black or African descent. The joint appointment distribution will be 70% African American Studies/REGSS and 30% History. The normal teaching load is two courses per semester. Review of applications will begin October 21, 2024 and continue until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications:

• A doctoral degree in African American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, Ethnic Studies, History, American Studies, Performance Studies, Gender Studies, or a related discipline centered scholarly on Black or African descendant communities.

• A demonstrated record of innovative research and scholarship.

• Evidence of dynamic and effective teaching involving African American-centered coursework.

• An interest/ability to teach historically informed coursework in a history program, including those at the graduate level.

• For candidates at the Associate level, scholarly research, teaching, and professional service records that warrant an appointment at the rank of associate professor with tenure (contingent upon University of Texas Board of Regents approval).

Preferred Qualifications:

• An active community-centered research agenda.

• A conversance in Black-Brown articulations of history, culture, or contemporary forms of allyship.

• The ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of students from an urban population, many of whom are first-generation and from working-class backgrounds.

• A commitment to advancing the University's mission to thrive as a multicultural Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

• A record of, or commitment to mentoring students or junior faculty.

• A record of external scholarly funding.

Working Conditions

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
