Position Description

Reporting to the director of Development Communications, the associate director will be responsible for HBS’s alumni-focused direct marketing appeals program (mail, email, web overlays) aimed primarily at boosting annual and reunion giving to the HBS Fund and expanding membership in the HBS Fund Investors Society, the School’s leadership annual giving society.

The associate director will be expected to

  • Make strategic enhancements and refinements to the current appeals program informed by data analysis and best practices.
  • Manage the day-to-day execution of the appeals program, doing so in a way that appropriately maximizes efficiency (of people and financial resources) and effectiveness in helping to meet HBS Fund and Investors Society fundraising goals.
  • Be a strategic and creative thinker, an advocate for the role of direct marketing, and a leader who can collaborate with and unite multiple stakeholders to ensure the success of the School’s direct marketing appeals program
  • Interpret data to determine market segmentation and produce appeals that move prospects through the pipeline and boost annual support for the School
  • Collaborate and coordinate with relevant colleagues on the strategy and messaging to ensure alignment across all HBS Fund communications.
  • Supervise two appeals team members (one full- and one part-time) and work closely with other Development Communications team members and freelance writers on direct marketing messaging.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Reunion and Leadership Giving team— particularly on reunion appeals (some of which are volunteer-authored) and special fundraising pushes and challenges—and report periodically to senior Development staff on strategies and results.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required
• At least 7 years of related experience is required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 5-7 years of fundraising experience, with specific expertise in developing and managing sophisticated direct marketing campaigns and knowledge of industry trends and best practices
  • Experience as a frontline fundraiser and with social media for development is preferred
  • Experience as a manager and mentor. Proven record of strong project management and organizational skills, including the ability to plan and manage multiple projects with multiple stakeholders simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Understanding of analytics (modeling, stats, clustering, scoring, segmenting, etc.) to drive direct marketing strategy Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to locate, interpret, and report data from a variety of sources Budget management experience
  • Advanced expertise in Excel
  • Familiarity with BSR Advance and other Advance tools, such as Qlik, and experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; a team player. Impeccable attention to detail and follow-through

Additional Information

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
