Position Summary



The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Custodial / Grounds Worker.



Perform cleaning and housekeeping duties in buildings and public areas. Remove trash, maintain floors, furniture and fixtures using specified cleaning equipment. Perform grounds/landscaping duties as needed on a seasonal basis such as mowing grass, trimming, raking leaves, shoveling snow, and picking up trash and recycle materials.







Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Maintain buildings and grounds in Historic New Harmony, performing a variety of semi skilled tasks to include custodial services, structures maintenance, and grounds maintenance.

  • Set up or move furniture and equipment in support of special activities, meetings, or exhibits.

  • Perform tasks to help maintain landscaped and turfed areas, roads, walkways and parking lots, playing fields and recreational areas.

  • Perform minor carpentry and routine painting tasks. Some painting may be in support of exhibit installation.

  • Use basic grounds tools and/or equipment to perform duties such as picking weeds, weed eating, mowing (using a push mower), and edging.

  • Perform trash removal and collect recycling as needed.

  • Assist in event setups as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.







Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma / GED required.

  • Previous work experience demonstrating a familiarity with and aptitude for maintenance and housekeeping duties and/or grounds or landscaping experience preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Ability to perform duties requiring frequent lifting, bending, and stooping.

    Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.






Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard hours are Tuesday through Saturday between 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Scheduling will be flexible and at the discretion of the New Harmony Lead Maintenance Mechanic.
  • Occasional irregular hours may be necessary during special programs or as needed to complete job duties.
  • This position is considered essential. When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to report to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies.
