Job Summary

This is a full-time permanent position under the supervision of the assigned Custodial Supervisor. The custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned areas and related work as required. He/she is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend at any Southwest Tennessee Community College location as assigned. Work is reviewed and evaluated through inspection of work performed. Specific duties may vary depending on the type of facility to be cleaned. This position reports to the Macon Cove campus and typical working hours are 6:00 am - 2:30 pm. This position may be contacted during non-duty hours.

Job Duties

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization; 
  • Perform all assigned tasks in a professional manner in order to reflect the highest integrity of the Custodial Services Department
  • Adhere to the company’s safety policies to create a safe work environment for everyone; 
  • Cleaning and sanitation tasks in an assigned building or work zone, as well as special work projects; 
  • Ensure that lavatories and restrooms are clean and sanitary by following prescribed procedures, and industry best practices;
  • Clean classrooms/offices, furniture, and equipment; 
  • Clean interior walls and glass by removing the adhesive tape, thumb tacks, paper pins, staples, and similar items, and washing and scrubbing (if necessary) the walls with prescribed wall cleaners to remove stains and graffiti;
  • Wash all interior glass, including windows, mirrors, and door glass; 
  • Remove all trash from assigned areas by collecting trash from various trash containers and receptacles, transporting the trash to designated outside trash dumpsters, and emptying the trash into the dumpsters; 
  • Assist in preventing accidents resulting from snow or ice-covered walkways by shoveling or sweeping snow or ice from sidewalks and entrances, and spreading ice melt within the assigned area; 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets and labels;
• Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly;
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees;
• Ability to recognize and report maintenance needs in buildings and on the grounds;
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts to complete tasks (for example: measuring and mixing chemicals);
• Sufficient knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, and the proper use of vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment;
• Assist with event set-ups as needed;
• Ability to operate a computer and respond to e-mails clearly and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

• Successful completion of eighth grade. High school diploma or GED Equivalent (Preferred).
• Reliable and able to work overtime and weekends;

Minimum Qualifications Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Working Hours

• Physical ability to perform work that can involve carrying, lifting, pulling, standing, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, reaching,      crawling, and prolonged walking;
• Work area can be dusty, hot, wet, smelly, and around large noisy equipment;
• This position may be contacted during non-duty hours for emergencies;
• After-hours, weekend, or holiday work may be required.
