Department of African and African American Studies: Assistant or Associate Professor in Global Health and Black Studies (Tenure-track)

The Department of African and African American Studies (AFAS) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a focus on health, healing, wellness, health interventions, and/or medicine among Black populations in Africa and/or the African Diaspora, including Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin American, African American, Afro-Oceanic, or Black communities elsewhere. We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar who can contribute to our Global Black Studies initiative and whose research agenda encompasses a scholarship and activities related to the critical social and/or historical analysis of health or health-related interventions as it pertains to Black populations and communities. We are interested in innovative scholars who can contribute to AFAS’ curricular, experiential learning, and intellectual life activities. Though this position is a 100% appointment in AFAS, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in other academic units and external partners, and should be able to teach and mentor students in the new Public Health and Society major within Arts & Sciences as well as interact with faculty and students in the new School of Public Health.   

We seek a scholar of exceptional range, capable of interdisciplinary, innovative, and creative scholarship, as well as public-facing work. The specific health issue, disciplinary approach, and geographic region are open. Candidates with training in Black or Africana Studies and/or behavioral and social sciences and other comparable interdisciplinary fields are encouraged to apply, but we also welcome applications from candidates from the humanities. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate how their research, teaching, and/or practice aligns with and contributes to the mission and growth of AFAS as well as to the strategic plans of Arts & Sciences and the University as a whole.  Duties will include teaching two courses per semester, conducting research, writing for publication, contributing to curricula and programs that reflect the intersections of Black Studies and Health, advising undergraduate and graduate certificate students, actively participating in the intellectual life of the department, and engaging in service for the department and college. Most importantly, we seek a colleague who will help propel AFAS at Washington University into a leading department nationally and globally through innovative and world-class scholarship, teaching, and mentoring. 

PhD in hand by July 1, 2025 for appointment at this rank. Candidates for the rank of associate professor should have an outstanding academic record of research, publication teaching, and service commensurate with tenure at that rank.
