Job Summary

HGSE is a diverse community of learners, teachers, and employees who are passionate about changing the world through education and striving for maximum impact in the field of education. This new, grant-funded position will be situated within the Democratic Knowledge Project (DKP-Learn), a research lab focused on K-16 civic education, at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. DKP-Learn is led by Professor Danielle Allen. DKP-Learn has three strategic initiatives: civic education in K-12; civic education in higher education; and competency-based assessment K-16, starting with the civics education use case. This role, will support one of the K-12 civic education projects, a national virtual civics and history professional development program. The grant is part of the Educating for American Democracy (EAD)-Harvard Initiative, a collaborative effort involving multiple external partners to advance implementation of the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap, via educator and school leader professional development and technical assistance to school and district implementers. The EAD Roadmap is a framework for high quality K-12 history and civics education. The EAD PD Senior Project Manager will report to the Director of the Educating for American Democracy K-12 Project.

The work of the EAD-Harvard Initiative includes building out a major, online professional development program for K-12 educators aligned with the EAD Roadmap. The Program is currently in a pilot phase, and so the EAD PD Senior Project Manager will support its growth from the pilot phase into a sustainable program. We are developing and launching a program with nine courses that will be run twice over two years, starting in October 2024. The work of the EAD PD Senior Project Manager will be integral to the initiative's success.

The EAD PD Senior Project Manager will oversee project work plans, timelines, and deliverables for the project, funding by a grant from the Department of Defense Civil Society funding opportunity in their STEM Education program. This position will also manage team meetings, including weekly project meetings, setting and compiling meeting agenda items, and ensuring action steps are recorded, communicated, and completed. The Senior Project Manager supports the Director for the Educating for American Democracy K-12 Project and collaborates with other members of the DKP Learn team and partners working on the project. 

Position Description

Collaborate to review project plans and proposals and develop project objectives; identify project responsibilities by determining the phases and elements of the project; calculate time frames and sequence the stages of the project, evaluating and revising as needed with project leadership 20%

Ensures successful project activity/deliverable completion within available resource parameters and project time frame; identifies need for additional funding or suggested reallocation of resources as needed.  10%

Contribute to project marketing/dissemination strategy and activities 5%

Prepare and provide project status updates, including for project funders and external stakeholders 10%

Facilitates and plans the content of project team meetings (such as compiling agenda items, ensuring discussion/decision/action steps are documented) and provides feedback on local project ideas and/or work product; sets up mechanisms for cross-fertilization of ideas 20%

Articulates and drives project milestones and resourcing strategies. 10%

Advises project leadership on key project issues and contributes suggestions for addressing/solving 10%

As needed, contributes to program development and course design. 10%

Performs other duties as needed 5%

Basic Qualifications

BA; Experience in the K-16 sector is preferable. 3-5 years of progressive project management experience or equivalent required. Supervisory experience is preferred.

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire with a possibility of extension.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
