Faculty Positions in Applied Quantum Information Science at Indiana University

As part of a major, multi-year initiative to expand research activities in Quantum Information Science across the IU Bloomington campus, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering invite applications for multiple tenure/tenure-track positions at the assistant or associate professor rank to begin in the Fall of 2025. While appointments will be made to outstanding candidates with primary homes in one or more departments, including  Physics, ChemistryMathematicsComputer Science, and Intelligent Systems Engineering, this cycle of the search is particularly focused on applicants in chemistry, mathematics, computer science and intelligent system engineering. Furthermore, successful candidates will have the opportunity to interact broadly with our IU Quantum Science and Engineering center faculty, which is a vibrant mixture of physicists, chemists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, linguists and economists.

We are particularly interested in researchers working in the areas of quantum information theory and experiment, simulation, sensing, and materials. Candidates who conduct research that complements our activities in atomic/molecular/optical physics, quantum simulations, quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, materials chemistry, quantum algorithms for chemistry and condensed-matter physics, experimental and computational photonics, and ongoing efforts within the interdepartmental Quantum Science & Engineering Center and multi-institutional Center for Quantum Technologies, will be given preference. We encourage applications from scholars who apply interdisciplinary perspectives across a variety of these domains. 

Qualifications: Applicants should possess a PhD in Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics (or a related field) and be committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

Responsibilities: Candidates are expected to sustain an active, externally funded research program, to engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching, and to participate in service to the university and the profession. Candidates should be able to work effectively in a team environment. To advance scholarly innovation and excellence, we especially welcome candidates whose demonstrated experience, research, teaching, and mentoring will support the university’s priorities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The IUB Quantum Science and Engineering Center is a vibrant community of physicists, chemists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, linguists and economists. While it was initated through internal funding from the university, the center has substantially grown through external grants and is part of the only Industry University Collaborative Research Consortium (IUCRC) that is focused on Quantum Information Science and Engineering and is jointly funded by the NSF and currently 13 different companies interested in quantum research. It is to the advantage of successful applicants to dip into this broad pool of potential collaborations to further enrich and grow the center.
