Position Summary



The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Gallery Assistant.



This position will greet and provide information to guests; provide excellent customer service; conduct cash transactions; open and close gallery areas; provide orientation programs and assist in inventory.







Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Open and close gallery and shop.

  • Greet visitors and provide information about New Harmony and surrounding area.

  • Process customer purchases. Write sales information on invoice, compute authorized discounts, accept cash, checks and charge payments, make change, and issues receipts. Secure cash and media at the register.

  • Complete daily work sheets and transaction reports.

  • Assist in promotion of gallery events and art sales.

  • Assist with school and group tours.

  • Provide orientation to exhibitions.

  • Provide information and materials relating to the town of New Harmony.

  • Assist in maintaining inventory including pricing merchandise, restocking shelves, and arranging displays.

  • Assist with preparation of exhibitions and shipping of work.

  • Assist in inventory.

  • Other duties as assigned.






Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma/GED.

  • Ability to accurately handle sums of money, checks, and credit cards, and in counting change.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of microcomputers, word processing, and electronic mail software.

  • Must be adaptable, open to change and to considerable variety in the workplace.






Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • One year of retail experience.

  • General understanding of and/or art history.

  • Experience installing exhibitions






Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard work hours are part-time and vary. Gallery hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Open April –December on Sunday, 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
  • Weekend hours required.
  • Occasional evening hours will be required.
