Job Summary

The Culinary Laboratory Technician supports the educational mission of the College’s culinary school by maintaining an organized and efficient kitchen laboratory environment. This position manages kitchen operations, ensuring the highest standards of food safety and sanitation. The Culinary Laboratory Technician assists in the preparation and setup of culinary labs, maintain inventory of ingredients and supplies, and supports the development of new recipes and instructional materials. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, along with a passion for culinary arts and a commitment to fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere.

Classroom/Laboratory Support

  • Prepares and organizes kitchen spaces and laboratories for culinary classes, ensuring all equipment is functional and clean. Oversees the proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment, troubleshooting issues and coordinating repairs as needed. Provides technical and administrative support for students, faculty, and Chairperson.
  • Maintains a well-stocked inventory of ingredients, utensils, supplies, and equipment, coordinating with suppliers as needed. Ensures timely reordering and minimizing waste. Documents accurate records of inventory usage and supplies. Reviews accuracy of orders upon receipt.
  • Implements and upholds food safety standards and sanitation protocols in compliance with health regulations. Conducts regular inspections of the kitchen and storage areas to ensure cleanliness and safety. Ensures compliance with all local health and safety regulations.

Customer Service

  • Works closely with culinary instructors and administrative staff to support curriculum goals and program development. Answers questions related to lab procedures, processes, equipment use, inventory, and expected results.  Provides walkthroughs and orientations to new faculty, orienting them to lab policies, equipment, and procedures. 
  • Ensures adequacy and availability of supplies and materials. Transports materials between locations, as needed and directed.  Ensures responsibility for College resources by practicing good stewardship in procurement, maintenance, and use of materials.
  • Answers general questions and provides information to students regarding course content, available resources, and other general information.  Performs duties to support teaching function for Culinary.
  • Stays up to date on culinary trends, techniques, and innovations to enhance educational offerings and student experiences. Maintains confidentiality of student records and other information.

Administrative

  • Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities.  Creates, updates, and maintains laboratory preparation documents. 
  • Manages equipment and material inventories. Orders new lab equipment and supplies required to run culinary labs. Completes lab fee analysis.  Orders, maintains, and distributes required laboratory materials for students, staff, and faculty.  Meets with faculty and staff to determine capital equipment needs, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in food procurement, professional kitchen operation, or other relative experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal laboratory working conditions with regular exposure to minor cuts, burns or other incapacitating injuries. Employee is occasionally at risk of electrical shock and occasionally works near moving parts including choppers and slicers.
