Position Description

Under the management of the Director of Platform Engineering and Operations, this role will be responsible for implementing and managing technical infrastructure supporting the HBS Online learning platforms and services, application development environments and pipelines, and other ancillary infrastructure services which run primarily within Amazon Web Services (AWS). They will collaborate with systems administrators, data engineers, and software developers to manage and determine the future direction of the HBS Online infrastructure, including environments underlying new AI services, that is critical to our organizational success.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and manage the networking, computing, and storage services of our global, large-scale, consumer-facing online learning product.
  • Continuously enhance and modernize all aspects of our infrastructure to ensure our solutions and applications are secure, scalable, and aligned with established university policies, industry best practices, and the latest in new technology.
  • Tune and optimize the performance of a variety of systems, focusing on high availability and scalability.
  • Work both as an independent/task-driven contributor as well as an integral member of a collaborative team to support day-to-day operations of applications, infrastructure and systems.
  • Participate in a regular on-call support rotation and, if necessary, work off-hours.
  • Execute efficient troubleshooting methodology and utilize analytical thinking to address issues (simple and complex) and communicate findings, recommendations, and solutions in a clear and concise manner.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Real-world experience designing, implementing, and deploying AWS services and environments with Infrastructure as Code (such as Ansible, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation).
  • Experience securing AWS environments using Virtual Private Networks (VPCs), subnets, route tables, access control lists (ACLs), and web application firewalls (WAFs) as well as managing Identity Access Management (IAM).
  • Experience maintaining and operating web applications and application infrastructure such as databases (ex: Aurora, MongoDB, or PostgreSQL), container orchestrators (such as ECS Fargate), and load balancers.
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and maintaining complex continuous integration and continuous delivery/deployment pipelines in GitLab or other CI/CD platforms.
  • Understanding of system administration in Linux-based systems, specifically in securing and maintaining servers with patches and upgrades on a timely basis.
  • Responsible for logging and monitoring services with tools such as Datadog, AWS CloudWatch (and other Amazon tools), and Splunk.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with software development practices a plus.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite a minimum of 2 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
