The Division of Business and Community Services at Holyoke Community College is seeking
part-time instructors to teach in an innovative, intensive 5-month noncredit Medical Assistant
training program for a local employer. Students will be paid employees taking 40 hours per
week of classwork. Instructors will prepare students to take and pass the RMA exam. With
assistance, instructors will develop curricula and plan course content, provide lectures and
hands-on instruction, and evaluate training effectiveness so that students learn the specific skill
sets and knowledge needed to obtain certification and to pursue a career as a Medical
Assistant.
 
The instructors will need to become familiar with current state and federal regulations and will
have to keep accurate attendance, grade, and skills information. Experience as a teacher,
trainer, health care personnel instructor, or direct Medical Assistant supervisor is preferred.
 
Courses in the program include: Intro. to Medical Assisting; Anatomy & Physiology; Medical
Terminology; Insurance and Billing; EKG; Phlebotomy; Clinical Skills; Law and Ethics for Medical
Assistants; Intro to Drug Therapy.
 
In your cover letter, please identify which courses you have previously taught, or are qualified to teach, and provide references upon request. We are looking to hire a team of instructors, as
well as Learning Coaches with subject matter expertise.

  • Ability to teach in online, hybrid or face-to-face settings. The courses will be daytime, M-F, with some laboratory classes potentially on Saturdays or weekday evenings, at the HCC Center for Health Education. Some courses may be offered asynchronously online, but we prefer the majority to be taught in-person.
  • Instructors are expected to make himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Instructors are expected to attend all scheduled classes. If it is necessary for the instructor to miss a class, he/she will follow appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or the supervisor's designee and is responsible by providing an alternate assignment.
  • The instructor will utilize active learning methods and use a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course. Such activities can include but are not limited to: a.) Cooperative learning. b.) Experiential learning, c.) Writing for learning and/or Critical thinking initiatives.
  • The instructor will arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the program coordinator.
  • Instructors are expected to be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data including assessment of student performance, including final grade reports.
  • Instructors are expected to be supportive of students' learning goals by: a.) Focusing on student learning outcomes b.) Taking into account the needs and abilities of the students  c.) Becoming familiar with academic and social support.
  • Instructors are expected to make reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences.
  • Instructors are expected to maintain the academic integrity of the college.

REQUIRED:  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in healthcare field, or relevant industry Certifications and experience.
  • Prior healthcare teaching educational experience, with Medical Assisting content.
  • Commitment to, and demonstrated ability to, work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body.
PREFERRED:  
  • Experience as a practicing Medical Assistant.
  • Experience teaching related coursework / Experience with an LMS.
  • Master’s degree in healthcare, adult education or similar field.
  • Experience teaching first generation college students.
  • Experience working with diverse adult student populations.

Part-time, non-benefited position

Per Course Rate:  $1,300-$1,700 per credit equivalent (dependent on number of non-credit courses previously taught at HCC; no benefits

Funding Source:  Grant
Anticipated Start Date:  December, 2024/January, 2025

- All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. HCC is not sponsoring H1B Visa.
