POSITION SUMMARY

The medical assistant of the Student Health Clinic will work along with the nurse practitioner and another medical assistant to assist in patient care and administrative assistant duties. They will be expected to assist in the examination and treatment of the patients under the nurse practitioner's direction. They will be responsible for triaging the patients, phlebotomy skills and lab processing. The medical assistant must be proficient in oral and intramuscular medication administration. Administrative duties such as signing patients in and out, assisting with scheduling, answering phone calls and ordering needed clinic supplies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Holistic Student Support

  • Maintain a knowledge of campus supports to help students succeed in health and wellness.
  • Promote, support and participate in student education relating to health and wellness.

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Ensures the responsible fiscal stewardship of the supplies needed to provide patient care.
  • Assist in maintaining supplies in appropriate quantities but with close attention to limiting loss due to lack of use and expiration.

Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

  • Cultivate an equity mindset by treating all patients with high-level healthcare with emphasis on patients at higher risk due to socioeconomic status, age, gender or other social health determinants.
  • Maintain positive relationships with other departments within the college and bring attention to areas that may need additional services.
  • Serve as liaison between all patients and the nurse practitioner.

Teaching Excellence and Program Innovation

  • Assist in analyzing clinic goals and outcomes with direction of the nurse practitioner.
  • Assist in development of health education clinics.
  • Participate in health education clinics sponsored by Student Health Services.
  • Stay current by reviewing nationwide academic research relating health
  • Educate patients while in clinic within the scope of your practice. Refer to research-based resources for further education.

Knowledge, Skills and Work Characteristics

  • Ability to triage patients including heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, height and weight
  • Proficient with phlebotomy skills. Does not have to know how to process blood in laboratory but highly preferred.
  • Ability to administer oral and intramuscular injections.
  • Good working knowledge of electronic medical records.
  • Strong communication skills with confidence to call patients about laboratory results and other needs.
  • Ability to multi-task between administrative tasks and medical tasks

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and training: Requires a high school diploma and medical assistance certificate, CPR certified
  • Work experience: 2+ years in a medical clinic

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and training: Spanish speaking in addition to above
  • Work experience: 3+ years experience with at least 1 year in a team leader position
