Title: Network Engineer

Institution: Volunteer State Community College

Job Summary:

Assist the Manager of Network/Telecommunications Infrastructure with recommending, planning, implementing, maintaining, and monitoring policies, hardware and configurations for the college’s information network and related equipment.

Job Duties:

Responsible for implementing recommended policies for network use and security. Configures and installs various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls.). Performs network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations. Identifies and resolves network issues. Maintains and completes documentation of all network resources including wiring diagrams. Assist with managing the campus firewall. Assist with vendor oversight for network related projects. Researches and develops recommendations for the application and implementation of emerging technologies related to the institution’s networks. Collaborates with other technical support personnel and network management personnel from non-college networks. Installs and maintains network equipment. Assists the Manager of Network/Telecommunications Infrastructure with telecommunications duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of industry specific experience OR Associate’s Degree and 5 years of industry specific experience.
Minimum experience to include managing local and wide area computer networks, firewalls, and wireless LAN solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful completion of either a Cisco or network related certificate program.
Experience maintaining an enterprise firewall solution.
Experience with Cisco WebEx Calling and Unified Communications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and ability in all aspects of managing local and wide area networks including wireless networks, VPN site to site and remote VPN access, this experience also must include all layers of the OSI Reference model.
Hold expert knowledge of protocols utilized in the college’s network such as TCP/IP, DHCP, TFTP, STP, VTP, OSPF, and SNMP.
General knowledge and ability to implement protocols and practices necessary to maintain the security of the college’s information infrastructure via the network.
Network trouble isolation and resolution skills utilizing common network tools and applications.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Available for on call support for after-hours network problems that affect the ability to access to 24x7 applications.
Available for network reconfigurations after hours or weekends to minimize impact on the college’s activities during peak traffic times.
Knowledge and ability in implementing and maintaining physical access control systems, as well as video surveillance systems.

Pay Rate: $62,385 - $77,981 annual salary depending on experience
