Job Summary

This is a part-time, temporary position working under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Safety. The Police Officer 1 investigates crimes and protects faculty, staff, students, visitors, property, and facilities. Provides other safety related services. Must be flexible to work different shifts if and when deemed necessary.

Job Duties

  • Monitors, notes, reports, and investigates suspicious persons, situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area.
  • Patrols the campus/specific area by foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle/motorized conveyance.
  • Assures building security, traffic control, parking lot management, and patrol readiness for crime and hazards.
  • Investigates accidents involving persons or property and the probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action.
  • Issues citations for traffic and parking violations.
  • Testifies in court or legal proceedings.
  • Keeps records and makes reports.
  • Operates and maintains law enforcement equipment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard high school with interest in radio operations.
  • Must be an active duty sworn law enforcement officer, retired, or recently separated sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Be able to work 20 to 32 hours a week.
  • Be able and willing to work flexible shifts.
  • NCIC certified.
  • Have knowledge of various methods of investigations.
  • Have knowledge of geographic areas of each campus.
  • Ability to ascertain facts by personal contacts, observation, and the examination of records.
  • Be able to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • The successful candidate must be P.O.S.T certified (Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission pertaining to transmitting and receiving messages by shortwave.
  • Knowledge of the geographic area.
  • Knowledge of the operation of radio transmitting and receiving equipment.
  • Ability to operate a short wave radio.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to speak clearly with a well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, students and other employees.
  • A background check will be required for the successful candidate.
