Title: Police Sergeant

POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs all duties of a Police Officer, enforcing applicable laws, ordinances, policies and procedures keeping the Campus, Faculty, Staff, and Students safe and secure. Is the second in command in the absence of the Chief. Has a primary additional duty of assisting with the planning, organizing, coordinating and directing of departmental training programs across multiple college campuses.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Is responsible for the protection of life and property of the general public within the jurisdiction of the Nashville State Police Department. In conjunction with the Chief of Police, is responsible for all training and training programs in the department. Serves as the departments Field Training Officer maintaining all required records, policies and information. Develop and implements Clery Act-required training programs and education activities for the institution, including identification and training of all Campus Security Authorities for each academic year. Serve as the records custodian for all Clery Act-associated records. Coordinate preparation and timely distribution of the institution's Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, including dissemination to current and prospective students and employees.

Leads training activities and in-service presentations for Police Officers, Security Officers and the campus population. Responsible for reviewing reports and assisting with submitting monthly reports to the TBI for mandatory TIBRS records. Responds and takes the lead in atypical situations and emergencies, until relived by higher authority. Assists with training activities and in-service presentations for other Police Officers, Security Guards and the campus population. Observes and reports suspected crimes, accidents, or activities of a questionable/suspicious nature. Discourages unlawful activities. Work with Chief of Police to plan, organize and implement security for campus functions, special events, crisis management, and disaster planning. Reports incidents involving persons or property, reporting probably cause of accidents, pursuing appropriate course of action and informing proper authorities as required. Cooperates with other law enforcement officials and jurisdictions and testifies in court or legal proceedings as required.

Operates and maintains safety and security department equipment. Keeps records and makes reports. Make recommendations to the Chief of Police on the development and implementation of comprehensive security programs, policies, and procedures. Serve as liaison with Contract Security Company/Security Officers. Provide guidance in coordination with Chief of Police for the Contract Security Officers. Respond to requests for assistance from students, faculty, and staff (i.e., jump starting cars, unlocking doors, giving directions, etc.) Maintain all training to ensure POST certification at all times. Assists with the maintenance and use of departmental equipment and helps to direct a program for vehicle maintenance and mileage reports. Performs other work as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma

Three (3) years of relevant law enforcement experience.

Possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license. Out of state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver’s license within thirty (30) days of hire.

Current certification by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Commission, per TCA 38-8-107, or the ability to become P.O.S.T. certified within six (6) months of hire.

Must pass a medical examination, drug screen and a psychological evaluation.

Must pass a thorough background investigation, including a favorable criminal background report and motor vehicle record.

Must never have been convicted of or pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state law or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft or controlled substances.

Must have received an honorable discharge if a former member of the U.S. armed forces.

Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Current certification by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).

Must be able to become CJIS Certified within the first 90 days to ensure access to applicable systems for this role.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Supervisory Experience

Associate’s Degree

Training experience and Field Training Officer certification in Tennessee.

Experience working in a campus safety and security environment, as well as knowledge of circumstances that are unique to a college setting.

Experience in emergency management and safety preparedness in a higher education environment.

Ability to speak a second language, particularly Spanish or Arabic.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Clear, accurate and concise communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with high attention to detail. Knowledge of Title IX requirements, the Clery Act, and other federal and state campus safety rules and regulations. Ability to learn and follow Nashville State and Tennessee Board of Regent policy and procedures. Experience with law enforcement training/teaching techniques. Ability to learn department-specific software and databases, as well as the ability to enter and retrieve information accurately. Ability to use a multi-channel radio system. Ability to train, mentor, and supervise others. Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations. Ability to pass and maintain physical fitness standards. Ability to pass firearm qualifications. Ability to complete a Field Training Officer program. Ability and willingness to work any shift assigned. Shift assignments may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and various hours or locations that best meets the needs of the department. Ability to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, the campus is closed and/or the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Rate of Pay: $46,735 - $56,081 depending on experience

Work Hours: 40 hours per week.
