Job Summary

The Production Editor is a member of the Content and Editorial teams within Harvard Public Affairs and Communications, Harvard’s central communications office. Reporting to the Special Projects/Production Editor, the Production Editor assists in the management, creation, and delivery of the daily newsletter product as well as special projects in a deadline-driven newsroom. The person who fills this role will have the chance to work on stories that cover research and analysis related to health, family life, literature, government, law, and much more. 
 
The ideal candidate will have a keen editorial and design eye and have a strong understanding of how interactive graphics, charts, and other visualizations can enhance news reporting and storytelling. They must be highly motivated, organized, and accountable. Personal qualities important for success include a creative, collaborative spirit and a willingness to continuously learn new skills and improve upon existing ones. 

Position Description

  • Help manage editorial production for the Harvard Gazette, working with project teams of writers, digital producers, creative staff, and editors 
  • Input content into the CMS, source and edit photos, maintain best-in-class article formatting, and work with the product team on template optimizations 
  • Help to develop, schedule, and edit the Gazette’s daily newsletter, a Monday-Friday email that has a distribution of approximately 300,000 subscribers 
  • Manage newsletter presentation, making judgments on story significance and arranging/formatting content
  • Determine use of WordPress templates and media components in appropriate news stories, incorporating innovative features as standard practice 
  • Write clear and compelling copy, including headlines, for website and newsletters 
  • Occasionally report and write on Harvard research related to health, family life, literature, government, law, and more 
  • Collaborate with social and creative teams to promote and distribute stories 
  • Support the digital and design teams to help iterate our article templates  
  • Adhere to industry best practices in digital accessibility when using multimedia elements (video, photo, titles, etc.) 
  • Bring an understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to increase traffic, working with editorial team on headlines, tagging, and other SEO-based practices 
  • Assist the team with proofreading of digital and/or news products 
  • Other newsletter-related duties may be assigned, e.g. list maintenance 
  • This position requires some evening and weekend work, especially with breaking news  

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years editorial production experience required preferably in a strong communications/deadline-oriented setting 
  • Strong editorial judgment 
  • A copy editor’s attention to grammar, spelling, and detail 
  • Experience publishing in Wordpress; high comfort level with a CMS 
  • Strong reporting, writing, and editing skills and a proven record of working collaboratively with a wide range of constituents 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Basic understanding of HTML  
  • Project management experience 
  • Experience with or willingness to learn email marketing tools 

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
