Position Description

Harvard Business School is a 1700+ employee organization whose academic mission is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. The Senior Human Resources Consultant supports the school's overall excellence by understanding and serving the needs of HBS employees, along with serving on committees for the human resources community at the University. The Senior Human Resources Consultant will join a dynamic HR team supporting several operating departments.

Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), this role serves as an HR consultant to several key internal clients. Specific duties include:

  • Provide technical guidance, consulting, and problem resolution for human resources related issues, using various HRIS including PeopleSoft.
  • Consult with department leaders, managers, and employees on employee relation issues.
  • Coach department leaders and managers in performance management, employee relations, retention, career development and compensation.
  • Advise, interpret, communicate, and participate in the development of HR policies, practices, and processes.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on talent acquisition, reorganizations, and special projects.
  • Manage compensation activities including conducting equity reviews of all staff; ensure that any contractual increases are implemented accurately and on time.
  • Understand, interpret, convey Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers (HUCTW) guidelines and policies.
  • Partner with HBS Learning and Development Team on various initiatives related to employee engagement, onboarding, learning, development, and mobility.
  • Collaborate with and serve on committees for Harvard University HR.
  • Ensure compliance with University Human Resources policies, procedures, and requirements and applicable legal regulations
  • Collaborate with department leaders and managers to actively diagnose, develop, and lead organizational development strategies and drive them to results.
  • Support managers in forecasting and planning their talent pipeline requirements in line with their department strategy.
  • Maintain current knowledge of progressive HR practices and key trends.
  • Understand all HR Services being developed and brokers those services as appropriate
  • Participate in team meetings and other projects as assigned.
  • Be responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant HR experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Additional Required Experience:

  • In addition to the 7 years of experience, 3 more years of experience are required, totaling 10+ years of required experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS applications and analytics

  • Advanced knowledge of employment law and HR policies and practices; financial/business acumen

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a union environment 
  • Experience in higher education strongly preferred 
  • Knowledge of the organization/institution (Harvard University)

Additional Information

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
