Position Summary



The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for STEM Curriculum Development and Outreach Specialist.



The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is seeking applicants for the STEM Curriculum Development and Outreach Specialist position. This newly-created, full-time, administrative position plays an important role in the Pott College of Science Engineering and Education’s strategic plan to enhance the region’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educational programming, focusing primarily on K-12 students and teachers. The STEM Curriculum Development and Outreach Specialist will oversee the future STEM Exploration Center on the USI campus and will collaborate with current and future partner schools, business/industry, as well as other departments and programs at USI. This position reports to the Director of the Southwest Indiana STEM Resource.







Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Oversee USI’s new STEM Exploration Center and its daily operations.

  • Initiate and establish collaborative partnerships with educational institutions and industry partners to promote USI’s STEM Exploration Center.
  • Host professional development opportunities and/or training events for area K-12 teachers and USI’s pre-service teachers.

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead K-12 field trips to the USI STEM Exploration Center. This includes developing/leading academic standards-aligned lessons for students, leading campus tours, ensuring equipment and learning resources are in good working order, managing inventory, scheduling, and communicating with visiting groups.

  • Troubleshoot, refurbish, and/or recommend replacement of equipment and educational resources housed within the USI STEM Exploration Center and SwISTEM Equipment Lending Service.

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead day camps for K-12 students during the summer months.

  • Develop innovative, forward-thinking, career-centered curriculum for K-12 student and teacher experiences.

  • Collect and analyze relevant data, continuously assess the effectiveness of center activities, and provide updates and progress reports to the director.

  • Serve on relevant institutional and community committees/boards that build partnerships and promote USI’s commitment to STEM education at the K-12 level and beyond.

  • Participate in campus K-12 education outreach initiatives.

  • Work with the USI Teacher Education Department faculty to integrate resources available through the Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center and USI Exploration Center into existing pre-service teacher curriculum.

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of all K-12 outreach initiatives sponsored by the SwISTEM Resource Center.

  • Assist in the development and submission of grant proposals necessary to sustain and/or expand the services offered through the SwISTEM Resource Center.






Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in education with emphasis in a STEM discipline.

  • Ability to establish rapport quickly and easily with diverse groups.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, oral communication skills, including group presentation skills.

  • Proficiency in use of word, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills.






Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • A master’s degree in education or related field.

  • Experience interacting with high school, middle school, and elementary school students, faculty, and administrators.

  • Experience with STEM-related K-12 curriculum design and lesson development.

  • Three to five years of experience teaching science, math, engineering, and/or technology in grades 6 – 12.






Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required for University activities.
  • Occasional travel required in the course of professional activities and professional development.
