At Carnegie Mellon University's H. John Heinz III College, we offer a truly unique academic experience that combines the fields of public policy, management, and information systems. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to join our team as the Chief Business Officer or Assistant Dean/Chief Business Officer, depending upon experience. This is an outstanding opportunity to work in an exciting and dynamic environment, where you will have the chance to create a significant impact.

You will be responsible for running the consolidated business, administrative, and financial functions for the Heinz College. With an annual budget of $60 million, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the college.

Your core responsibilities will include:

Provide expert advice and consultation on financial oversight, budget development, and performance, ensuring detailed financial management.

Analyze and report on budget reviews and make strategic recommendations to drive outstanding financial outcomes.

Ensure strict compliance with financial policies and procedures, maintaining the highest standards of financial integrity.

Handle personnel and payroll functions supporting the college, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Lead the oversight of procurement and contracting activities, driving efficiency and effectiveness in purchasing processes.

Ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions, facilitating successful vendor relationships.

Be responsible for sponsored research activities and ensure compliance with funding requirements, supporting groundbreaking research.

Provide strategic advice and direction for college initiatives such as research center development and degree program roll-out, driving ambitious growth.

Provide training and education related to various programs and policies, empowering individuals to successfully implement them.

Run data analytics, business intelligence, and organizational research activities, driving evidence-based decision-making.

To succeed in this position, you should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals. A solid grasp of strategic management principles is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.

You should demonstrate:

Skilled in creating long-term plans and possess a strong capacity to identify, nurture, and strengthen relationships to enhance the department's influence and partnerships.

Proficient in gathering, correlating, and analyzing budgets, funding streams, and financial allocations, and skilled in developing financial and personnel infrastructures.

Deeply familiar with principles and practices of budgeting, revenue forecasting, and cash flow analysis.

Deep understanding of applicable labor and financial federal & state laws and guidelines.

Qualifications for Chief Business Officer:

A Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience is required. Candidates holding an MBA is helpful.

At least eight (8) years of experience in business administration and finance operations or related experience.

At least five (5) years of management experience strongly desired.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly desired.

Qualifications for Assistant Dean and Chief Business Officer:

Master's degree in a related field or have equivalent experience. Candidates holding an MBA is helpful.

At least ten (10) years of experience in business administration and finance operations or related field.

At least five (5) years of management experience strongly desired.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly desired.

Sponsorship: Applicants for this position have to be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. The university will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Work Posture: This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on-campus/in-office presence three (3) days a week.

Travel Requirements: You should be able to travel both domestically and internationally and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed.
