Overview:

The Director of the Trinity College Rome Campus will oversee Trinity College’s flagship international campus in Rome, Italy. Trinity College is committed to a vision of a globally relevant education that prepares a diverse student body for leading transformative lives. The Director of the Rome Campus will be responsible for the design and delivery of global programming that ensures accessibility to intercultural learning experiences in Rome and maintaining the program’s longstanding commitment to a place-based, academically rigorous education. The Director will assume a leadership role at the college, working with the Senior Director for Global Engagement, in integrating the Rome curriculum with academic departments and programs at the U.S.-based Trinity College campus in Hartford, Connecticut. The Director will also liaise with key educational partners, including sending schools and local institutions in Italy, that serve as an extended community of the Trinity College Rome campus in Italy.

Candidates for the position will have experience in strategic leadership of both administrative staff and highly regarded faculty who provide the extracurricular and academic services of the Rome Campus. We seek candidates experienced in international education with proven capacity in a supervisory role, oversight of professional development of staff and faculty, and effective delegation of responsibilities within a team environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Strategic planning and institutional relations. Responsible for developing a strategic vision of the Trinity College Rome Campus that serves the academic breadth of the Trinity curriculum through inclusive programming for students and faculty. Maintain and develop partnerships with entities in Italy to support the Rome Campus curriculum and intercultural learning opportunities. Collaborate with Trinity College Advancement and Alumni Affairs for increased alumni engagement and fundraising.
  • Risk management and legal compliance. Ensure that all program operations are compliant with local Italian law, fiscal responsibilities, and U.S. legal standards for operation of education abroad programs (such as the Clery act reporting). Review regular preparation of faculty contracts and manage contract renewals and modifications per Trinity policies. Work with the Dean of the Faculty office and Office of Study Away in review of contractual arrangements for core faculty and supplemental faculty for courses as needed.
  • Student affairs. Ensure that the student affairs staff provide excellent student support across all areas of the program: residential life, personal growth, extracurricular activities, and academic success. The Director will provide oversight of required pre-departure and on-site orientations, as well as any safety communications needed based on emergent risks or safety concerns. Responsible for staying informed of standards and practices in the Education Abroad community regarding student wellness and support from both a U.S.-based and European perspective. Responsible for ensuring that student conduct meets the standards of the Trinity College Student Code of Conduct and that infractions are handled in an appropriate manner.
  • Health & safety. Responsible for ensuring that access to medical treatment, including mental health support, is available to students and that appropriate procedures for notifying insurance carriers are followed. Oversight of safety protocols for student activities, including class trips and excursions, and ensuring that staff and faculty are adequately trained and capable of following health and safety protocols.
  • Academic planning, assessment, and oversight. Responsible for developing a forward-thinking global curriculum, in collaboration with Trinity College leadership and faculty partners, that supports the disciplinary specializations and general education requirements of a liberal arts institution. Work closely with the Associate Director for Academic Affairs to ensure regular curricular assessment and faculty review.
  • Program promotion and recruitment. Maintain and build relationships with academic departments at Trinity and with partner sending schools, including delivery of regular site visits and campus visits for promotion of the program to faculty and students. Development of appropriate viewbook and curricular materials for use in program promotion. Conference attendance and participation in key professional associations in the field such as the Forum on Education Abroad, NAFSA, AACUPI, and the European Association of International Education.
  • Budgeting and finance. Collaborate with the Sr. Director of Global Engagement and Director of Academic Finance in development of program budgets for each term. Provide regular budgetary oversight to ensure that operations follow Trinity expense guidelines. Ensure accurate and timely submission of monthly expense reports. Work closely with the local accounting and payroll firms to ensure timely payment of bills, staff salaries, and local taxes.
  • Human Resources. Maintain overall responsibility for the program staff and faculty, including hiring, supervision of lead staff, and oversight of performance assessment. Maintain a positive, collaborative work environment; ensure compliance with Italian labor law as well as Trinity’s standards for appropriate workplace conduct. Provide ongoing professional development workshops and trainings as needed to meet standards in the international education field.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with campus leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders/constituencies.
  • Demonstrated capacity to integrate goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion across all academic, social, and operational programming
  • Demonstrated experience in managing global risk assessment and emergency incident response protocols.
  • Effective communication (written and oral) skills, including public speaking and virtual presentations.
  • Experience in strategic planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Excellent human relations/customer service skills with the ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work well with deadlines and to prioritize among multiple projects and communications with office stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use new technologies and software applications.
  • Ability to uphold a professional code of ethics and maintain confidentiality.


The candidate must be eligible to work within the European Union and be compliant with Italian immigration requirements 

Qualifications


Required:

  • MA degree in a related field
  • Three-to-five years professional administrative experience in international higher education or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Italian culture and U.S. higher educational culture.
  • Ability to travel to the U.S. and Europe throughout the year as needed for work related visits, meetings, and conferences.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Italian languages.


Preferred: 

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field
  • Five-to-eight years professional administrative experience, preferably administering an international education program, including risk management, budgeting, and student affairs. 
  • Recognized professional engagement in the field of International Education.
  • Experience living and working in Italy.
