Job Summary

The mission of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is to advance the public's health through learning, discovery and communication. To pursue the mission, the school produces knowledge through research then translates this knowledge into evidence that can be communicated to the public, policymakers, and practitioners to advance the health of populations.

The FXB Center for Health and Human Rights is a University-wide center that conducts rigorous investigation of the most serious threats to health and well- being globally. The Center was established 30 years ago to promote the idea that health is threatened when people are denied or deprived of their rights. We work closely with scholars, students, the international policy community, and civil society to engage in ongoing strategic efforts to promote equity and dignity, especially for the marginalized and oppressed around the world
 

Position Description

The ED will serve in a chief of staff type capacity, coordinating and facilitating priorities set in partnership with the Center Director, building coordination and communication within the Center staff and faculty, and representing the Center to the broader T.H Chan School of Public Health (SPH) and Harvard communities on key substantive priorities. The ED will have strong writing skills and experience in successful grantwriting and other fundraising. This position will serve in a liaison capacity with the SPH Office for External Relations, writing and reviewing proposals and assisting in donor relations and the creation of related materials for fundraising. The ED will also liaise with external constituents and donors to set and achieve strategic fundraising objectives.

The ED will work with the Center Director and Center faculty in the development and implementation of the Center’s strategic vision and mission and the development of a five-year strategic plan. To help ensure that these strategic objectives are met, the ED will provide advice and guidance to Center faculty in the logistics and management of research projects, as well as oversight on related Center events, forums, and symposiums. The ED will also liaise with the FXB Center's Advisory Committee, as well as the Center Director’s future Faculty Steering Committee.

Additionally, the ED’s role encompasses oversight of several administrative functional areas:
1) Human Resources, such as hiring, job reclassifications, the bonus pool process, job development, staff recruitment, compensation planning, performance management, and professional development;
2) Finance, including managing the Associate Director of Finance and having oversight of and accountability for a budget $1.5M;
3) Identification of grant and gift opportunities
4) Departmental Administration, such as space planning, organizational development, and administrative policies.
Additionally, the ED will oversee the Centers representation on its website and in social media, as well as promote its  image within the university and to the general public by bringing attention to its scholarship and activities, coordinating with the Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health communications office.
This position may be assigned special projects as necessary, such as working with the Center Director and Assistant Director of Communications on high level speech writing and presentations, among other duties.

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term end date of two years from date of hire, with the strong possibility for extension.

PLEASE NOTE: Some travel, occasional nights and weekends, and occasional after-hours may be required depending upon the Center's needs.
 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience is required
  • 8+ years of directly related and progressive administrative experience required, specifically in public health, global health, and/or higher education, required
  • Supervisory experience required.  

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in related field (i.e. - public health or medicine) strongly preferred
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising and grant writing/oversight

  • Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
  • Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion

  •  Experience fostering and reinforcing an environment that values unique experiences, cultures, backgrounds, and goals

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
