Position Summary: Pellissippi State Community College is seeking qualified contract instructors for its Workforce and Community Development Programs to meet the needs of our area workforce. We provide customized training for entry level employees as well as for professional advancement. Specific training is conducted at the request of business and industry partners. We also offer open enrollment courses for individuals seeking to upgrade their skills. Instructors work on a part-time, temporary contract to provide educational instruction for a specific class, workforce training, or youth camp. 5% Ensure a safe laboratory environment through proper coordination and disposal of chemical/biohazardous waste, update Safety Data Sheets (SDS), proper labeling of chemicals and reagents, test safety equipment; create visual aids in the laboratories to inform instructors and students of required safety guidelines and practices, inform instructors of updated and/or current safety standards. Complexity &amp; Creativity: Organization and time management skills, attention to detail, ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment and problem solving. It is important to have the materials and equipment ready to be set up in a timely manner. This is especially true when there is a short time frame to break down one laboratory exercise and set up another. While the materials necessary for the laboratory exercises are straightforward, it is good to have creative thinking in this job in to make any substitutions in a short amount of time. Creative thinking is required to balance and plan for four disciplines of science; knowledge all four and of OSHA must be sufficient to realize and deal with problems that may arise. There are SDS available to guide in the safe usage of chemicals Each laboratory technician also has “prep books” that lay out the chemicals, equipment, specimens, etc. for each laboratory exercise for consistency across campuses. Able to engage in the college’s mission and values.
Magnitude of Impact: The people impacted by this job are the laboratory instructors and their students, as well as students as a whole on the site campus. If the laboratory technician is not fulfilling their responsibilities, instructors and/or students could be injured due to an unsafe environment. Students may not learn key concepts due to a laboratory exercise not working properly or through the absence of required materials (such as models, keys, reactives and other equipment). For example, if the laboratory technician is not fulfilling their campus duties, students may not get the full experience of campus activities. Any of these impacts could be long-term leading to a lack of retention and lower graduation rates. If a problem arose that could not be corrected by the laboratory technician, the first level of contact for an instructor would be the Lead Laboratory Technician and or other Laboratory Technicians, then the Dean of Natural &amp; Behavioral Sciences.
Responsibility for Accuracy: Errors are minor and infrequent, consisting mainly of backorder items, living organisms dying, and minor accidents in the laboratory (i.e., spills, broken glass, contaminated media, etc.). Quality is verified through the instructors who rely on the laboratories’ exercises being prepared properly. If something was not set out or working correctly, the instructor would let the laboratory technician know immediately for correction.
Financial Impact: If a laboratory technician was inattentive or careless, equipment and materials could be broken or wasted, costing the college money. The laboratory technician is responsible for an annual inventory list of valuable equipment, that if lost could also cost the college money. An attentive laboratory technician should notice potential safety concerns and minor defects in equipment that may be fixed economically before they become a major concern resulting in the replacement of equipment.
Judgement and Decisions: General day to day decisions that deal with organization of materials, laboratory exercises preparation and setup.
Nature of Contacts: The laboratory technician interacts with Support Staff on the site campus; the Dean, administrative assistant, Maintenance, and the Environmental, Health, &amp; Safety Compliance Manager &amp; security Officers. The nature of the interactions usually is to aid in a common task. Dean &amp; administrative assistants – communication about campus specific events &amp; meetings. Maintenance &amp; housekeeping – Communication about AC/Heating issues, basic equipment issues, cleaning issues. Environmental, Health, &amp; Safety Compliance Manager - Scheduling hazardous/Biohazard waste removal and general laboratory &amp; chemical and safety concerns and first aid kits; communication about safety and reporting accidents.
In addition, the laboratory technician interacts with outside vendors, such as those dealing with hazardous/biohazard waste disposal, equipment installation and repairmen etc.
Physical Demands: 
The job is physically demanding. This includes climbing ladders to lift objects on and off high storage shelves or squatting to lift objects from floor cabinets (such as water baths, carboys, models, boxes, and glassware); sometimes the need to move equipment up to 30 lbs. Also is collecting the required materials &amp; equipment from around the prep area and laboratory classroom.&nbsp; The work environment may include: desk work, fumes from hazardous chemicals, physical irritants from chemicals, contact with blood or body fluid pathogens etc. The position works with dangerous equipment and substances and wear the appropriate safety equipment to handle them. Manual dexterity is especially important for preparing microbiology and chemistry to the precise filling of reagents and media as well as to inoculate and growth of organisms.&nbsp;
The laboratory technicians must be able to hear, smell, or detect color to see if there is a problem or emergency in the laboratory.&nbsp; Hearing is required so that the laboratory technician is able to detect problems in the lab, potential equipment malfunctions, and to maintain a safe lab environment.
Visual is required to maintain an organized, well-prepped, and safe laboratory, as well as accurately measure liquids using graduated cylinders, burets, etc. The detection of color is required because many of the chemical solutions required for the laboratory exercises are colorful and the laboratory technician must be able to detect the color to ensure the correct solution has been prepared. Also, it is a necessity to be able to read changes in litmus paper to ensure the safe disposal of pH solutions.
Hazards: 
The laboratory technician is exposed to many hazardous chemicals, and carcinogens on a daily basis that can cause; skin irritation, eye irritation, chemical burns, and inhalation irritations. There are other physical injuries that could occur from chemical in eyes, hot plate burners, or Bunsen burners as well as cuts from broken and contaminated glass;*bacterial/viral infection exposure possible due to exposure to biohazards in the Anatomy &amp; Physiology or Microbiology laboratories; therefore, laboratory technicians must be very aware of the work environment (especially in cleaning the laboratory because students may have broken glassware or non-reported spilled of hazardous chemicals, materials that may or may not have been disposed of properly) to reduce the risk of bodily injury. For a conscientious laboratory technician, there is a probability of injury of 10 % to 20 %.

Job Summary:
The Director is responsible for the Medical Laboratory Technology program which grants degrees. The Director will lead, supervise, manage, and implement all aspects of the program, including classroom and online course development and instruction, curriculum development, marketing, recruitment and advising of students, budgeting, and faculty supervision and support, and revision/modification of all program components as needed. Position includes teaching responsibilities, including clinical practicum and capstone courses. The Program Director holds a 12-month faculty position with release time each term based on the size of the program, as determined by the Dean and VPAA. This position is responsible for delivering quality instruction using integrative technologies. Faculty are expected to provide academic advising to students and participate in college, department, and community activities related to the College’s mission. 
Job Duties:
Teach 38-42 TLE per year via on ground, online, hybrid or web-enhanced modalities as assigned with both teaching and approved release time included in this expectation. Typically, program directors receive 3 TLE release time per term. Teach evening, weekend, off-campus, dual enrollment, and distance-based courses as required. Develop curriculum; evaluate and review of credit and non-credit courses; develop online classes as needed. Evaluate and monitor progress to achieve goals and objectives (and those by any licensing, registering, or certifying agency as applicable); assist with affiliation and accreditation efforts. Recruit and advise students and support persistence/progression through graduation. Maintain office hours and availability to students. Complete required College trainings. Complete all required reports such as attendance, Early Alerts, progress reports, grade submissions and administer and return surveys by the required deadlines. Attend college, division, department, and faculty meetings. Serve on college and department committees. Attend professional development activities. Participate in community service. Ensure compliance with all Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and College policies, guidelines, licensure requirements, and other state and federal guidelines. In addition to the typical faculty responsibilities above, the Director of Medical Laboratory Technology program is expected to: Direct, supervise, manage, and implement the overall operation of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. Interview, hire, supervise, and evaluate program faculty and ensure adequate staffing for the program courses. Establish annual program goals including curriculum development, implementation, and assessment. Lead and coordinate all accreditation activities and documentation for the program, including but not limited to staying current with requirements and completing self-studies, site visits, and annual reports. Market the program, recruit and advise students into the program and provide academic and career advisement for prospective and current students. Coordinate an advisory committee to support the program, hold annual or semi-annual meetings, and ensure documentation of all advisory committee activities. Monitor and analyze data pertinent to students’ successful academic performance and ensure completion of VSCC’s Academic Program Review for Medical Laboratory Technology program. Complete and coordinate program’s TBR Academic Audit. Manage online course delivery by ensuring all model courses are current. Manage textbooks including working with departmental committees during the review process, coordinating with publishers, negotiating purchase packages, and organizing demonstrations and training for electronic resources. Plan, conduct, and document regular departmental meetings. Oversee student complaint resolution by ensuring that student discipline and complaint policy and procedures are followed, meet with students and coordinate with the Dean and/or Student Services personnel in mediating resolution. Develop, promulgate, implement, and monitor policies and procedures related to program equipment and laboratories that are consistent with Vol State and TBR policy. Develop, monitor, and maintain department budgets. Maintain parts and supplies inventory, ordering parts and supplies and keeping related records. Recommend purchase of new equipment and submit appropriate purchase and/or TAF requests following Vol State and department procedures. Network with industry personnel to assist in promotion of the college and its programs and the securing of guest speakers and adjunct faculty. Maintain the program accreditation through the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS); supervises and directs required reporting to state and national agencies. Oversee use of facilities and equipment for day, evening, and weekend classes offered by the Medical Laboratory Technology program. Act as liaison between students, sponsoring agencies, local medical community, and state level certifying/licensing agency as needed. Other duties as assigned.&nbsp;
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree from an accredited institution. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a clinical laboratory, including teaching experience acceptable to the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board. Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (active standing). Holds ASCP-BOC or ASCPi-BOC generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist. Licensed or eligible for licensure in Tennessee. Has knowledge of education administration as well as current NAACLS accreditation procedures and certification procedures. Has documented evidence of continuing education in technical and educational methodologies to provide adequate and appropriate training in the areas of curriculum design and teaching techniques for medical laboratory personnel.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree from an accredited institution. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a hospital/clinical medical laboratory with supervisory or management experience. Minimum of three (3) years full or part-time equivalent collegiate-level teaching experience in an accredited Medical Laboratory program; extensive experience in clinical practice. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and/or experience using a variety of instructional delivery modes. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Pay Rate: $63,290 - $79,112 annual salary depending on experience

POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for delivering quality chemistry instruction in an equitable environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teach chemistry courses via on-ground, online, hybrid or web-enhanced delivery modes as assigned.
